Have I ever explained publicly how Romaine came to be?

The full story is that Romaine started out life as Ral Enekai (back when she was known as Enekai Rahal), way back in 2015 when I first teased the idea of Enekai being the name of a Saiyan. Enekai was originally meant to have Caulifla's hairstyle and a more muscular build, and you can find an image of Enekai back when she was an electrokinetic elf girl, circa 2016, several months prior to Caulifla's reveal. But by the time I decided to commission Salvamakoto to draw Enekai, Caulifla had already been revealed, and I didn't want to be accused of making a recolor. Plus, at the time, I thought Caulifla's design was lacking. I think it's fine now, but circa 2017, it felt like she had a rushed design, and thought "You know how you'd fix Caulifla? Give her some extra bulk and Hiei's outfit." That first image wasn't intended to be Romaine but rather a corrupted version of Enekai because I was too cowardly to have her drawn and instead hid behind "fixing" Caulifla to look like Enekai.

Several months later, I wanted to have Enekai formally drawn, but once again I chickened out because by this time, Caulifla had taken off in terms of popularity, and there was zero chance Enekai would be seen as anything other than a recolor.

So once more, instead of having Enekai drawn, I asked Salvamakoto to return to that image of Hiei!Caulifla, but with a few changes to make her "edgier": cross Hiei!Caulifla with Super Vegeta Den's Kakarotto— e.g. his scars and bandaged arm. Then, for good measure, make her gray like Tullece. All I needed now was a name, and I figured "She's probably Tullece's daughter, so what's a good lettuce-based name?" Iceberg wasn't going to cut it, nor was Arugula or Escarole. Those are okay Saiyajin names, but I wanted something snappy, and "Romaine" came to mind and didn't sound bad. The rest is history!

It wasn't until the Yabanverse was formalized in December 2017 and I finally started getting Enekai drawn that I sucked it up and had Salvamakoto finally draw her, but by that time, Romaine had also taken off and Enekai slipped under the radar.

It's funny. Romaine was a last minute rush job of a character, a total combobulation of different ideas thrown together in the edgiest way possible, and I can still find people who remember her. Whereas Enekai is a full decade old now, and virtually no one knows who she is. Hopefully that will change someday...
