Description A time warp scene
A cy-fi story
A dirt coloured love
Hey hope for glory
I like to fight,
I kill global oppression
If I quit, no hope of redemption

- Billy Idol, Tomorrow People -

A picture I finally finished, after a few weeks of doodling and pondering exactly what I wanted to do. While the character was at the time inspired from my AO character, she turned out pretty much differently in the end. I'll probably be keeping her design for my cyberpunk story - she looks just spunky and determined enough to actually represent Jen McAran in a good enough way (that's the name I gave to the heroine for the moment; I like the sound of Jen a lot, and McAran was the family name of the Netrunner I played a few years ago in tabletop RPG).

The "changing color" hair isn't here just to be pretty, by the way; it's a small part of the cyberpunk culture, and anyone who's played Cyberpunk 2020 will likely remember the hair implants and various other "fashion accessories" that can be found in such a universe. We're in the world of superficiality and trends that change every two days here, after all... oh wait, it's not so different from our own Anyway. This is a Network scene, as Jen is a Netrunner; I'm not sure if I'll keep this seeming as her Network avatar, it's more like her real physical appearance in fact.

Done in vectors, with a doodle as base to trace on. Doodle done by yours truly, of course. I've been experimenting with a drawing style slightly different from my "regular" one, as I feel it's time for a change, and... well, I personally like the result.

Critics *very* welcome, as usual.

This looks pretty cool, especially the background. I think the skin might have needed a tiny bit more shading, though. But all in all - pretty nice pic!

Thank you for your comment.

Unfortunately, I lost the original file in a HDD crash, so I'm not sure I'll ever be able to correct anything on it. But I'll keep that shading bit in mind for other pictures, then.

Oh dear, that's a pity (HDD crash).

I hope you do regular backups now! It is always my greatest feat that my digital art could get lost, thus I have it mirrored on 3 HDs, one extra computer plus a large USB memory stick and I even gave my parents one of my DVD backups to safeguard in case my house catches fire or the like ^^ (talk about being data paranoid XD)

Yes, now I do backups more regularly.

The most infuriating thing is that I was in the middle of doing the backup when my HDD died. >.<

Completely.

I also lost part of my writings. Fortunately I could save most of them, even though the changes I had made in the past three months were lost. But since it was mainly a story I've reworked later on, it's not as painful.

Gosh... I actually consider buying storage space at one of those data-backup servers for my stuff, but somehow I just don't fully trust them to really keep my data safe there.

Yzabel In reply to stayka [2010-02-03 19:30:07 +0000 UTC]

Rule of thumb: no data is safe anywhere, anyway.

Speaking of data, in that cyberpunk story, I actually ended up included a rogue, homeless AI named "Fractal", who had lost its original server space, and therefore had to upload itself secretly on other servers for it to go on existing.

Indeed. But one can try and spread the data over as many locations as possible ^^

Now the background makes me feel like weeping. I lost the original file in a hard-drive crash, and the BG was one I made using distortion tools I can't remember any more now! *flails herself with noodles for not having performed a backup sooner*

Oooh...I like this one. It's "Jen" alright. Love her face, the dress and the background. Her hands are a little big, but still they don't look abnormal compared to the petite body.

I've grown fond of vector artwork after I was more or less introduced to it through you, and this picture fits nicely in with the rest. Perhaps I have a special sort of feeling for it, being based on the Jen I know .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yzabel In reply to Tussa [2005-04-14 12:56:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, so it wasn't only an illusion about the hands, I see It's not too bad indeed, so I guess they can stay this way for the time remaining, and i'll try to correct this a bit for the day I make a print of it or something.

I was mostly experiencing with a... well, I won't say "new-new" style, as it's not too far from my older style, simply less anime-ish, I think (I grew tired of the anime-ish feeling, to be honest, so this probably just is a natural evolution in this). I'll see if I can do some more pictures like this, see if it works well or gets tiresome. In a way, I think I probably will never "get rid" of "Jen", but I feel okay about that... the core of the character, after all, is one I like a lot, it's just the miserable part that was a pain This "Jen" is anyway a bit different, in her backstory and personality (and with less of an accent, else my readers will really kill me). I've wondered if I shouldn't include a "Heiji" too in the story *lol* Perhaps make him alive this time, for a change. Haha.

*stops babbling now*

Character designs are always something enjoyable and really lets you explore a lot of things that you'd otherwise not think about. You've done a good job with her and her surrounding setting and it definitely brings out the purpose of her character well. Those purple data line thingies look pretty cool too!

Yzabel In reply to ekster [2005-04-13 15:03:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! They were a bitch to make, though - on the paper it looks alright, then all of a sudden the curves get all hectic once you've finished them and you look at the vector file Drawing good curves can be hard, hehe.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ekster In reply to Yzabel [2005-04-13 15:22:42 +0000 UTC]

Hehe I totally hear ya on that. Getting curves to look right definitely takes practice. I remember the first few times I tried doing curves with the pen tool, I couldn't get anything to look right!

Yzabel In reply to ekster [2005-04-13 15:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes! The first times we worked with this tool when I was at school, the teacher would also always tell us "noo, don't use so many control points! What's the use of being able to modify them if you put 20 of them to make a simple curve?!"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ekster In reply to Yzabel [2005-04-13 15:37:29 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh yes..... control points, the less there are, the more natural things look! Even then, I still spend a lot of time adjusting the handles and thinking "is that reaaaaally what it should look like?"

*fesses up* Same here Everytime I look at a picture after having let it rest for 2-3 days, I always get this feeling... sometimes I wonder if it'll ever be "perfect"!

Yeah, the thing is, I can write in English, but as I'm trying to make my way through professional writing in my own country, it kinda limits me regarding the language to use if I want to be able to do that with my works.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HiddenRelevance In reply to Yzabel [2005-04-12 15:17:54 +0000 UTC]

yeah understandable.. if i had to translate everything I wrote into another language I wouldn't get near as much done!

Yzabel In reply to HiddenRelevance [2005-04-12 18:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Aye I had started to do that, a few years ago, for another story, but it was just terribly troublesome - partly bcause the story was unfinished, thus every time I would rework some parts of it, I had to rework the translation too. Not funny at all, hehe.
