Description It has been over ten years
Six months
Two days
Ten hours
Forty minutes
And seventeen seconds since I first saw them—
And I am still terrified.

Of the girls who got it right the first
(Or the second,
Or the third) time,
Sixteen and perky and
Put-together and perfect
Where I’m not.

I should know better.
I’m older
And taller
And wiser—
And a million other thing’s that they’re not.

But it’s the eyes that get me,
Wide, glassy, bovine things
That the world rolls off like
Rain on a rooftop…
Rigid, blank mirrors
Reflecting only flaws.

I know what you mean. I sit with these bovine things in sculpture and ceramics, and I'm terrified and confused by them. One once asked me what "miraculous" meant, and today I used the word "emphasis" and she accused me of using a "big word". Yet they somehow seem more complete, more satisfied with their lives than I can ever be. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, I guess.
