Description June 10, 19, 2013 colored pencil drawing.

UPDATE: The bad quality photograph has been replaced by a high quality picture.

I drew this for the cover of one of my novellas I wrote in 2011 but still haven't printed (we're getting on that right now) called "The Meaning of Hell." In "The Meaning of Hell," the protagonist Hadley Lewis feels as though she were the cause of her best friend and roommate's death. As Hadley reflects upon the friendship she shared with now-deceased Bri Aseltine, she becomes increasingly insane with guilt. The story highlights true friendship, loyalty, and the manner in which scars might be healed. If you are interested in reading this, please let me know. I have not placed it anywhere online at this point, but I would always love to have readers tell me what they think.

This specifically depicts Hadley's repeated nightmare. She dreams of walking through an alleyway similar to the one where Bri died. The violinist on the front represents two people: a street performer they passed the night they died, and the fact that Bri herself was a very talented violinist. Given the ghostly colors of the violinist, I mean it most to be the original character Bri in this drawing, though I mean it to be ambiguous.

Very beautiful coloring. Though I do think the perspective could use a little work.

The intricate detail is brilliant and the colours are well chosen too. The violin neck could do with lenthhening but otherwise this is an amazing piece of work!

The shadows, the lights on the windows and the Moon give this artwork a very surreal and noir feel to it. It reminds me so much of a planned scene on my Comic-- one of my OC's will be under the street light wearing a Badass Long-coat, but instead of playing a violin, the guy will be seen playing a saxophone.

Another good artwork. . .man, now I wanna hear Miles Davis and the other Legends play their classy jazzy tune again

Thank you very much! I think the combination of a surreal night and the clarity of a musical instrument is very interesting, and I find it neat that I'm not the only one who thought of that for a creative work. A saxophonist in a stellar black coat underneath a street light is a really awesome, vivid image in my head - sounds like a great scene!

Nice job, the colors are very surreal and the details on the buildings are great!

However, I do think the violin could use a bit of work. The shape and shading are almost flawless, but the neck seems a little short, and the bow is drawn too far up on the neck, I'd try and bring it farther towards the violinist's shoulder. The hand, however, is brilliantly done.

Overall, though, there is very little I could change. Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment. I'm glad the shading on the violin worked... I thought that was some of the hardest parts. Thanks for the comment about the proportions of the neck, you're right.

Hi dear, I'm from !

I really like your drawing and the atmosphere it conveys. I am quite curious to see how it looks in reality since I know that cell phones are not good tools to make photos.
I am impressed by the way you recreated the night atmosphere by using dark and cold colours and I am wondering wether you used another picture as a reference or not.
I find this almost perfect, so my only suggestion is related to the hands anatomy: I think the palm is too large compared to the fingers, maybe you should work a little more on it in your future drawings

On conclusion, I would say that this work is simply great
Well done!

Thank you very much for your comment! I really appreciate this. I did use several pictures as references for both the hand playing the violin and for the alley, although I used both of them pretty liberally. The alley I used for the basic shape of buildings and a few shadows, but I changed a lot of the textures, colors, and shadows from the original alley photo reference.

you must be very creative then!
I'm not a good drawer but have fun with it so sometimes I tried to draw something original and I have to say that I cannot really used more than one reference

Aw thanks.
When it comes to drawing, I can't pull something completely out of my head and draw it well like my roommate, who's a visual arts major. In most instances, I have to have at least some sort of reference and I feel like that's a bit of a handicap sometimes, but hey! it's all about enjoying art and improving what you can do, right?
