Description Sajore, as a blacksmith

... I graduated as a blacksmith exactly one year ago. I would have loved to have done that as a profession, but my arm couldn't take it anymore and I could not smith... I would still love to continue it as a hobby if I only could find a blace for a forge somewhere ^_^

I am really missing smithing, the smell of the forge, the feeling of really accomplishing to make something from the steel... the fire... the pretty fire... (I'm not a pyromaniac, really )
Anyways, this is why I had to draw this picture. ^_^ And doesn't Sajore look just absolutely delicious as a smith

the anvil is a bit too low, but I couldn't change it because then we could not see Sajore's legs

..... a bit of a rant: anyone seen "Kingdom of heaven"?... or well, any movie with smithing:
They are forging cold steel! ARGH! first they heat up the steel in the forge, then lift it to the anvil and start smithing the cold steel next to the hot one!! (how can you tell? the soft, well heated steels voice sounds something like "tosss" when smithing, not "bling"!)
I just had to point that out... because I'm about to rip my hair every time that happens in movies

***

the picture was painted with ink, scanned and shaded and coloured at photoshop. ^^

sidenote: very healthy for a vampire to be a blacksmith: fire...

EDIT: changed the frame colour from white to black... much better ^^

EDIT2: sorry for bringing this back up again, I changed the lighting a bit and smudged blaces... it was way too tidy.
I hope you like this version... if you liked the other one better, it can still be found here: [link]

Thanks. Well this was painted on 2005 and back then a lot of jeans were like that(, including the ones I used when I blacksmithed).

You Blacksmith?

Yup. Well, a former blacksmith. I got a Tenosynovitis on my arm and that effectively stopped that career.

Can you actually make a living doing smithing in Finland?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zardra In reply to ChemicalWedding [2010-07-30 16:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you can. If you get an apprenticeship to a smithy and learn from a master, you can set up your own smithy. I know several smiths here who do very well. ^__^

ChemicalWedding In reply to Zardra [2010-07-30 18:11:17 +0000 UTC]

Really? I would have LOVED to learn to do that but I don't think you can apprentice in English and I was under the impression that you couldn't really make any money with it.

Zardra In reply to ChemicalWedding [2010-07-30 19:04:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure you can apply for an apprenticeship there too, but there are not many master smiths who take them so it might be hard to find one.
Smithing is art nowadays, they don't really make money the way they used to (making everyday equipments or weapons), but these days the smithed things are valued just as much for their uniqueness and durability: furniture, swords, knives, jewellery, gates, lamps, statues... there are a lot of things they can do and make plenty of money. ^__^

You don't necessarily need to give up blacksmithing completely. If you have the resources you could always invest in a power hammer and that would greatly reduce fatigue from your arm. I do know that's not the same as pounding the steel or iron with a hammer in your hand, but that's an alternative that could help make smithing your profession. Also, you can use the power hammer for cutting, punching, etc. Depending on the the kind of projects you'd be making, a power hammer would usually suffice to do most of the work and still leaving you with a little bit of lighter hand work for your enjoyment There are a lot of resources on the net and a lot of people you can ask for advice/suggestions on any topic. If you have any questions you can always drop me a note on here.

I guess for movies, directors find it more astonishing to use the metal sound "bling"rather than "tosss". Hollywood sucks in most "profession scenes". It's almost like any "fast-typing" computer geek can hack into any database around the world. That makes me laugh

heheheee, thankyou!
I guess I got a little buff when I was a blacksmith, I just wish musclepower would stay without doing anything, lol
... *and a blacksmith lecture begins* ... its not really about strength... the blacksmith I was working for showed me a techinque where you dont have to use strength at all to smith, it was so cool! ... no killer arms after that

Meh. Don't ever be scared the discription is too long, if people don't have the intention of reading it, they won't no matter the length. Question; Do you have this whole... thing... (In reference to the... Drawings... And everything... Storyline... Cahrecters etc.) in prose? Or is it just your mind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zardra In reply to AnikaChan [2005-06-02 17:20:12 +0000 UTC]

thats true, some people dont read descriptions even when they are one liners ^^

about the question, I have Sajore's and Xir'ag's story written down, 80 pages of it ... characters come from there and almost all the pictures of them I have either here or at my y! gallery
... but I'm coming up with new story every day, making new characters and continuing the storyline ^_^

now the only blace where I have the story is y!gallery, but if you can wait about 2 to 3 weeks, I will finally get my own gallery site ready and can post it there and link it here
