Humm... for some reason this makes me think of the Zone from the original Stalker movie. Which is a good thing.

Stalker is about a Zone in Siberia, where an alien artifact crashed. This artifact can turn people's dreams into reality, but also turns the Zone in an ever-changing landscape, where only a few special individuals, the Stalkers, can navigate safely.
The movie, made in Russia in the 1970s, is slow-paced and can feel boring for most people. I saw it as a kid, believe it or not, and fell in love with the concept, hence my nickname. I say, give it a shot, you may find a few good ideas there.
