The blue background pattern is supposed to get brighter and darker in some areas. I made it super subtle to keep the focus on Kratos - so, I guess it was a bit too effective.

It's a cool idea to have the background hue to glow and fade, but frankly they're too subtle for this occasion, which is why like someone else down there, I was baffled as to what's so special about this 'still' picture

It took me FOREVER to see why this is an animation. I was too focused on his face and waited for a blink or something. xD
The movement of the blue energy in the background is done nicely and subtle, though!

Haha - that's totally reasonable (a blink actually might've been nice). I tweaked and tweaked and tweaked that glow - trying to keep it noticeable but not actually drawing the eye.

Indeed. There was something about his expression early in the game when Atreus reaches to take his bow back, and Kratos pulls it away - his face was so still, yet his eyes had so much expression. So, the first thing I sketched here were his eyes.
