This is a very successful work that evokes a lot of feeling. I like the motion created through the angle of the mountains paralleled in the arm, the "flames" radiating off the shoulder and even the hair. The opposing angles of the "swords" adds even more interest.
The effect of having parts of the body drip into flames/tendrils mimicking the "swords" is also very effective.
What really heightens the drama is the effective use of lighting; using the "swords" as a lighting source. I love how the light glows in his hand and reflects on his pants, shirt and face. The mist effect is also very additive and not overdone, coming off the swords and at his legs. Talking about his legs, the colour and shading of the pants mimic the mountains and with the perspective make the subject look towering and heroic.
Lastly, I love the subtlety of the shadow of his opponent behind him. I did not see it at first glance, but it adds to the depth of the painting, both physically and in theme.
