Description after a really nice brunch, we had wine, and this guy came in.

in camera b+w. looks nice.

i don't know why i write artists comments, i'm not an artist and i hate comments - they sound pretentious and wanky, with utterly unimportant details like my use of in camera b+w mode.

really.

this was shot using trix and a leica and a 35 summilux.

and ive encouraged advanced critique, so get that wine and those berets out on the town folks.

Apart from the fact you've taken a snap inside my favourite Fitzroy cafe you've managed to, in one photograph, completely change the entire atmosphere of the place. The lighting and contrast in particular is absolutely stunning! The fact that the waitress (Who makes a good coffee for those who might be wondering) is in near perfect detail yet all surrounding sunlight is a white mass opens the picture up. Yet none of this can take away from the man, and the fact he is looking off into the distance (the tv tree perhaps?) and not reading at his book adds another element of intrigue. Even the tiniest details - such as no one obvious sitting outside, walking past or the chair at the bench turned sideways as though someone only just left are beautiful. Perhaps these are all things I notice because I'm a regular but none the they less create a wonderful moment in time. Well done! Oh and if you venture there again check out the ceiling lights.

You know, I didn't even notice some of those things... thankyou for your lovely comments, and for taking the time to actually write something - not just click 'fav' and walk away to the next thing.

email me, I'd love to send you a print - send me a direct message!

Well it is my favourite cafe, I recognised it instantly and got so caught up in it, it was just so beautiful and took me back to a lot of good times I've spent there. It's gorgeous and my favourite photo I've seen on deviant.

Really? That would be so lovely, thank you! Do you mean your email or through deviant? (Sadly enough I'm still learning to navigate this site.)

He's thinking about the last sentence he read.
Looking up from his book, his hand subconsciously reaches for the coffee. He knows where it is; there's no need to look. For now, he's lost in thought. There's only one mouthful of coffee left in the cup.

In my opinion, a perfectly captured moment.

This man appears dead to me. As if he is just going through the motions of life as a routine. For example, his book is open, but he isn't even looking at it.

UnderFloorboardWorld In reply to jaredbrautigam [2009-11-07 13:33:22 +0000 UTC]

That was my impression initially; but I know all to well the 'motions of life as a routine' and i don't believe thats the answer (if there is such a thing);
When inspecting closer, I feel its more a case of something catching his eye, enough to loose all thought on the book; think distracted, think 'the lady in the red dress' on the matrix.

Part of me likes to think someone came in dressed as a leopard, and was dispassionately asked to leave by the owner..

Depends on the country, but in most "modern" countries, no. Fine art, educational, and editorial use is protected. Commercial usage would require a model release.

Although since the cafe is private property, the owner would be within his right to say "no".
