Fun fact: There's a reason why the sword in panel 2 is designed the way it is.
the reason the handle on swords for humans have a single piece (usually) is because humans can grasp them.
...Ponies don't have hands.
But assuming that MLP ponies have wrists that work somewhat like human ones, they could mimic the action. But to make it work without the sword slipping out of their hooves, they would need a modified "hand guard" to go around their hooves.
Of course, that's more effective with "two-handed" swords. And "one-handed" swords would require a different type of guard, particularly one that goes to the side of the blade rather than forward.
