I got that album when it came out and it's amazing. I'm not into rap, but he does put a whole new spin on it with Trent and Alan Producing the songs. I love this picture, by the way. Fav +

l love the line quality of this peice. and your use of color is amazing. although the red lines are a little unsettling maybe if you were to use them to frame up the muscles in his face and hand instead of it being random.....its just a thought. besides that it looks amazing I also really like your choice in backround and framing it really copliments the drawing.

my friend jon introduced me to saul williams work several years back. Jon hates rap. Jon loves saul williams.
Saul Williams is interesting to say the least. The songs I have heard have seriously left me wanting to know more about the artist. And this illustration makes me want to look him up again, especially since you saifd hes coming out with a new album mixed by trent rez and moulder. That is completely awesome.
and this image is pretty neat, reminds me of alot of the blues artist paintings I see in memphis.

Co-incidentally, I recently 'discovered' a spoken word artist, HKB FiNN, aks HUNTKiLLBURY FiNN, who I am very excited about and doing a couple of portraits of.
You know him?

Great subject and style... the details and colors are wonderful! I feel like the teal background could use some slight texture or lighting to really give the picture a more complete feel...cropping it to fill Saul Williams into the frame might be another possibility. I dunno, maybe not. Not sure - but I feel like something is missing.

I tried to color skin with lots of scribly colors once too. but it turned out really dirty. this looks great though, so maybe I'll try it again.
I love the way you colored this. the markers with photoshop look great.

zeruch In reply to BlackCat-dd [2007-09-20 07:05:29 +0000 UTC]
'Scribly' lines actually took me a long time to get comfortable with, because it is very easy to be sloppy about it (which I was) instead of simply loose and free. At least for me,, it was alrgely solved by using a lot of different pens and brushes so I could take more control of line weight and behavior -- the rest kind of intuitively evolved.

BlackCat-dd In reply to zeruch [2007-09-20 07:29:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I used to draw in a kind of realistic manga style. I guess I got bored of that style, so I started experimenting with different styles. Eventually I started to draw more "scribly" when I bought these really fine fineliners.
I'm still experimenting a lot with brushpens, markers, ink and fineliner. So I gues you're right. It just takes time to get used to it. It's a big step from Photoshop to markers. I still do most of my work for school in Photoshop because it's faster.
But I was just wondering if you have a few tips or tricks I could use?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
zeruch In reply to BlackCat-dd [2007-09-22 07:15:03 +0000 UTC]
About the only tips I can really offer is to keep experimenting, and to really not be afraid to make all kinds of trial and error. Its the process that leads to discovery of how to make things work to your favor, sometimes to frustrating effect, but hopefully punctuated by bursts of creative evolution.

im definitely absolutely positively not as clued in on the music scene today as you are
That is because, unlike me, you likely have a real life. I live in a world of high-tech salaryman status, art studio hermetics, and autistic-level record store scrounging.
I know about music scenes so obscure, even the artists in it don't know each other.

Well, if you have styles you are into, let me know. I consolidated my old music blog on Vox to my regular blog just last week, so I can throw out material based on interest if you want.
