Description It's been a big, big while since I uploaded some stuff. Hard times of exams, homework and painful studying. But now I'm in holidays again so here's the first thing that I've been able to end on Inkscape: following the line of "wedding battle time with Twilight and Spike" ([link] ) I've done another AT-FIM crossover: the Sombra King, that is almost the same as King Sombra, but more creepy. I thought that the fittest villain in AT universe to crossover with King Sombra was the Lich: both almost never speak, both are heartless and both want to destroy life. The hardest thing to draw? the cape, which is ironically the simpliest part of the whole body. Also the dark magic thingies are hard to do.

Well, it's probably the only thing that I will upload in another big period of time. A lot of work to do for school. Anyway, as always, anyone feel free of commenting and critique.

Don't worry fellow internet citizen, Sombra and the Lich are both dead, the world is safe for now.

Well the Lich is a giant fleshy baby, but still... is like if he was dead, I guess.

Yeah. With the lich we got the "are you cold finn?" line, and with sombra we got the "slaavessss" line.Β

Anyway, I love both villains. They aren't even at the same level of evil, so comparing them is actually pretty pointless (and yes, I know how paradoxical that sounds when I say it in a lich-sombra crossover XD)

Sombra is a good match for the Lich in terms of villain quality; he wasn't cocky, he wasn't overconfident.. Hell,Β  he didn't even say a word. He made a real, efficient effort to prevent his defeat β€” something that most villains don't do β€” and the only reason he actually lost was because his victory didn't have a place in the story. I'm interested in knowing how you would've done him better.

lanternjoe In reply to Avristed [2013-08-09 19:11:53 +0000 UTC]

How Sombra was Godawful:
* If Sombra did everything right and still lost, clearly he wasn't a giant threat like they made him out to be. Hell, the princesses stopped him without the Elements last time and Luna seemed pretty confident she could solo him this time, so there was very little sense of urgency.
* The Scary Door, despite what Sombra defenders believe, was not a brilliant trap. It was a glorified retinal scanner.
* The Lich has meaningful interaction with the other characters. The closest thing Sombra had to meaningful interaction was when he gave Shining Armor herpes.
* We get a sense of what makes the Lich tick, even if we don't yet know why becoming a nuclear-powered zombie wizard made him want to destroy everything that ever was and ever shall be. Sombra had zero dialogue outside of growls done by a storyboard artist and, as said earlier, he had no meaningful interaction with the other characters. What little we know about Sombra was given over the course of a single exposition dump. He could've been replaced with a tsunami of Gak and very little would've needed to change.

As for how I'd have done Sombra differently? A number of things, but to make a long story short, I would've obeyed the most fundamental rule of writing, a rule McCarthy refused to follow:

Show, don’t tell.

Avristed In reply to lanternjoe [2013-09-11 00:16:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, forgot about this one. AHEM.

Anyway, the problem with your argument that Sombra wasn't a giant threat, is that he couldn't have been a giant threat with the rest of the story as it was. That problem in writing was on the part of the plot itself, and not Sombra; as a villain, Sombra did everything he should've done. He never even said a word, never gloated, didn't leave some glaring switch to turn off his traps β€” Twi's bypassing of all of his security measures was by pure god-modding and plot controlling alone; If she couldn't pull spells out of her ass, Sombra would've won the conflict without any hope for resistance. But, since that's something she can do, he was hopelessly out-matched from the very start. The writers didn't even bother to hide it.

If you're interested in direct comparisons, however, imagine if Finn were replaced by Twi. Between her teleportation and her "have the spell necessary" spell, the Lich probably wouldn't have even gotten away from the tree before being horn-slapped into oblivion. At least Finn's impenetrable plot armour was one that had an in-universe reason for existing other than "I can learn things!"

Admittedly, MLP can't afford the sort of creative freedom that AT gets. AT is designed for such conflict, and gets to take it on in a much more engaging way. That said, I agree with you that there wasn't enough urgency implied. The whole situation could've been done much better, but there's not a thing that I'd want to see different about Sombra. He was the only believable part of the whole thing.

Like you said; show, don't tell. Sombra never said a thing, and didn't make a single mistake except to not prepare for the unpreventable. The Lich is still an excellent villain, though, for the fact that he did much the same. His downfalls, however, were as a result of his own carelessness... Not because he couldn't hope to win.

lanternjoe In reply to Avristed [2013-09-11 21:15:38 +0000 UTC]

The thing is, Chrysalis was a much better villain; more threatening, actually characterized, there was a sense of urgency...

I suspect the key difference, the reason Chrysalis was generally better than Sombra in every way, is that, with Chrysalis, Rob Renzetti was Meghan's story editor, whereas with Sombra, Meghan was her own editor.

-He only lost due to a fluke, that makes him more scary, also The princesses cheap shotted him the first time.

-If All the mane six stared at the door at the same time there will be no one to save them, your point is?

-Lich barely talked to anyone besides finn

-He wanted to take over the crystal empire because he wanted to use the crystal heart to spread hatred and fear across equestria, which means weakining it before taking over it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lanternjoe In reply to MonkeyDZyrax [2013-08-18 13:29:18 +0000 UTC]

* Cheap shot? Seriously?
* If.
* Meaningful interaction isn't limited to just talking, ya mook.
* That has nothing to do with how the only things we know about him are what we're told, not shown.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MonkeyDZyrax In reply to lanternjoe [2013-08-18 15:41:28 +0000 UTC]

-Two on one, and the princesses are weaker now.
-Headcanons
-Yet he interacts with the crystal ponies like how a rapist looks to her victim, the crystal ponys shat their pants when they saw him.
-If you only seen LOTR without the books the only things we know about Sauron are told not shown

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lanternjoe In reply to MonkeyDZyrax [2013-08-18 19:08:51 +0000 UTC]

* That's not cheap. And they aren't weaker, they just aren't connected to the Elements. Their magic is still fine.
* Headcanons don't apply here. Only facts.
* From him just being there. Not really doing much to them. More of us being told.
* The thing about Sauron is that not only did he have minions and armies who were actively putting the Fellowship's lives at risk, demonstrating the threat he posed, but the only way to stop Sauron was to go into his proverbial backyard, which is itself an incredibly dangerous place, and destroy something he designed to make everyone want to keep it for their own uses and end up becoming his pawns. And if you'll recall, the Ring really did make everyone who acquired it obsessed with it. After being carried around by him the entire trilogy, the Ring finally got to Frodo, the Goddamn main hero, in the eleventh hour. The reason it was destroyed at all is because Gollum trying to take it back.

In short, Sombra was neither threatening nor compelling. Wait, why am I bothering with this? No amount of reasoning or logic will convince you.
