well up front ill tell ya the textures you created look great. the texture of the brushes in the shadow areas and the red paint strokes in the scarf look good.
overall though i think its a little bland. i cant quite place my finger on it, but it seems like its not quite done...
just my opinion of course!

i know what you mean i cant figure it out either but i saved the psd large file just in case i find it out and go back and fix it. and i used the sponge tool and i did it at a 400 resolution. i wanted to do 600 but i think the comp you'd have just turned off lol

always save lotsa layers in your psd!!
the new textures make the piece look much more interesting, but i have one more little niggle. the texture is pretty clearly a repeating pattern, and it looks very flat. that is it doesnt move with the curve of the skull. its only noticible at the top where it should be most "curvy".
(all the below is for photoshop.. dunno painter well)
hopefully that texture is on its own layer. if it is, goto filters/liquefy. the liquify tool has a tool called bloat (tools are on the left side in teh liquefy window). get yourself a big fat brush and use the bloat tool to try to make the top part of the skull texture curve with the skul more naturally. the way you use the tool is to click in one place and hold down, dont drag around.
so if you get that just right, thats a big plus right there. after that, we can use a layer mask to make the pattern a little less consistant by fading it out in spots.
layer masks are scary to new users, but they are the most incredible thing in photoshop besides selections! you GOTTA learn to use them1!!!!!1
ok so pick your texture layer. in the bottom of the layer menu is an icon that is a rectangle with a circle in teh middle. click it. youll notice that there is now a box next to your layer. the left is your layer, the right is the mask. now the way this works is that the mask is black/white only. whatever is white is visible, and whatever is painted black is hidden. so try it out, get your black brush out and paint over parts... youll see that its almost like erasing! the incredible thing about masks is that its NOT erasing. you can paint back over with white and it magically UN-erases!
ok so next part of layer masks is that you can use gray to make things partially hidden, to make them fade out. get a brush with a nice gritty texture and set the opacity to 30%, and the brush to black of course. now paint a few strokes and see what happens. you should see the texture become slightly less visible in places. you can creative manipulate the texture in this way until it looks more random, and less "patterened"
FINALLY, rememeber that a layer now has 2 parts. the layer and the layer mask. if you want to paint on the layer, you need to click the little pic of the layer. if you want to paint on the mask, you need to click on the mask.
learn it!! trust me you WANT to know how to use this tool!

yeah this does look alot better with the texture, but ur right on it being a lil flat and repeating. great info on the masks btw!

doh i put it on the color layer! lol i used photoshop for the texture. ok lots of layers. do i use a layer for tint, tone and shade? or put thiose together? and the flats on its own right? ok and i will definatly take all this in and use it in the next drawing of "bring it on beeches!"
i really wanna try coloring that one

kwant In reply to ZipDraw [2008-04-18 22:02:55 +0000 UTC]
everyone has their own method as far as layering. i usually keep my colors and shadows together on one layer, highlights on another layer, another layer for more lighting, then finally textureing and effects on a different layer. of course on top of all of this are the lines (layer set to multiply). the great thing about having multiple lighting layers is you can really tweak out your lighting with ease.
best way to learn is from your past work. i know when i started coloring i learned a lot about organizing layers by screwing them up lol i still have a ton to learn about coloring because thats really a weak point in my repotoire.

ah... well poopy.. lol ill learn it. and what do the multiple layers on one layer mean?

kwant In reply to ZipDraw [2008-04-19 15:08:06 +0000 UTC]
i think youre talking about where i said the layer was set to multiply?
at the top of the little box where all the layers are is a drop down menu. its usually set to "normal" but if you click it youll see a crapload of different 'blending modes'. once again the best way to learn them is to just play around with them.
open a picture, any picture. then place another picture on a different layer on top of it. you should now have 2 pictures on 2 different layers. obviously you will only be able to see the one on top right? well make sure you have the top layer selected, then change the blending mode from normal to anything else in the list and see what happens. try the whole list, there are some really cool results.
so what i was saying about was for you to put your lines on the top of all your layers. this seems kinda dumb at first because it covers up all the layers below right? well if you change the blending mode from normal to 'multiply' then only the black part of the lines cover whats below. the result is that you can color 'underneath' the lines, which is easier and faster.

i think it might be the lack of grit and texture in the skull when the bandana is so grungy and dark. if he scuffs up the skull a bit 2 match it'll look alot more finished i think?
