“Please forgive me, this is not easy to write. You are going to do great things one day. Go on a grand adventure, fulfill an ancient prophecy, and most certainly make friends along the way. It is the story that mothers and fathers will tell every night to their children. It is the story that empowers and inspires, the story that changes the world for the better. With your kindness, you have the power to do anything. I know you will make a fine hero for legends to recount eternally. But more than a hero, you are my son.

“I have so many… thoughts. Ideas, wishes, things that I will never get to share with you. To hear your voice, to see the smile that puts the sun to shame. Even now, I hear your laughter echo through these very halls. Nothing compares to the happiness your mere presence gifts to those around you. You always give the best hugs, too.”

(Some droplets of moisture fell to the paper as it was lowered. A couple small chuckles echoed through the room, and after a brief hesitation, the paper was lifted back up.)

“You are my little furball, and no words can convey how proud I am of you. I would give so, so much for one more moment with you. A lifetime is not something one can put value to, and yet I find myself trying to bargain, trying so desperately to find any way to let you keep the family you so deserve. No one as good and kind as you deserves such a horrid fate.

“Please believe me when I say that I have done everything in my power to prevent this. So many hours were spent trying to find another way only to end up at the same solution. Perhaps it is destiny; if your story is written, then perhaps this is a necessary chapter. Yet, that only strengthens my resolve to rewrite fate itself. I know I do not have that power. But that will not stop me from trying. With this I give you one last gift. A… let us call it a family heirloom. Take care of it well. I do not know if—“

(There are heavy eraser marks smudging some of the words together.)

“I wish I had more time. Know that though you may never see me again, I will always be with you. I love you, R—“
