The point of stained glass is twofold, one's the visual appeal of the colors and the light it throws (Suger's Lux nova), the other is the use of pictures to teach those who couldn't read (which was everyone) the stories in the bible.

In Sainte Chapelle, it's the former. Regular people almost never got in, because it was Saint Louis' reliquary/jewel box for the crown of thorns.

I loved it as well, unfortunately it's undergoing a massive restoration, so the entire left side as you enter the upper chapel was boxed off.

They were renovating the left side while I was there as well, and I understand your point about the class of people allowed in.

I feel this church is underrated and overshadowed by Notre-Dame cathedral down the street, but I don't really mind. The silence that comes with a small number of visitors makes for a more atmospheric and in-depth look at the architecture and artwork.
