I use 3D studio max for things that would take too much effort to paint manually in Photoshop or Painter.
For example, on the Feng Wei image.
The rings on his forearms are 3D.
I also made the pattern for the cloth in 3D.
Basically, I can bring the WIP 2D image in to 3Dmax. Then I model something in 3D, put it in front of the drawing in 3D space. And render that single 3D object.
I then take the object's render in to photoshop and super impose it. And try to match it as much as possible.
For the pattern on Feng's pants, I made a simple flat pattern in Photoshop.
I went in to 3DMax. Modeled a leg, and the loin cloth, added the texture to the objects, then posed them in front of the 2D WIP image.
Take the render of the 3D objects in to Photoshop and make them match the 2D drawing again, so you can't tell it's 3D.
It's a real handy trick I figured out one day.
Scorpion's Spear and rope are 3D also.
