Actually, there's going to be a new convention next year called Anime Revolution, at the Van. Convention Centre. I suggest you go to that one over Cos & Effect, since Cos & Effect was more of a costume convention, it lacked anime stuff that an anime convention would have. I dunno. If you want more info, there are Facebook groups... I'll probably still be going to both, even though Cos & Effect seemed like a disappointment last year...
YES, YOU CAN BUY STUFF AT CONVENTIONS! (I love shopping there) There's the Artist's Alley, where local artists make homemade things like keychains, buttons, stickers, prints, and sometimes doujinshi. Then there's the Dealers, where you can get more complex stuff such as manga, DVDs, merchandise, cosplay props and even cosplay costumes.
Shopping there is probably one of the greatest experiences of my life, LOL.

Oh yes, I should tell you about all the events happening... There's Kotatsu, a new convention happening in January, The Summer Festival at SFU and Minicomi (basically a big artist's alley) in July, and probably Cos & Effect and Anime Revolution in August.
