k, do you have any suggestions in brisbane of where to look?
I've looked online and found a few places was thinking liquid animation and another small studio but yeah, I'm pretty lost of where to go. I have yet to search the newspaper though. Did you find many places when you looked or is jusy my inability to use my brain?

AirTester In reply to dipsomaniac [2006-06-27 01:35:45 +0000 UTC]
ok, i ended up looking in the yellow pages, and contacted EVERYone... little did i know that a lot of these people were only self employed solo businesses! iiiiidiot....
for now, i suggest trying most artistic sectors, just to get your name out there. things like graphic design, multimedia, advertising... its best to have a go at all these. anyway, here's a few names you can try:
[link] - a place that although isn't an illustration house, is still creative, and were nice enough to reply to my email. they hire on a subcontractor basis.

hope this helps! i'll post up any other names when i think of em!

Yo katie...need your expert advice. What should one put into an illustration portfolio in order to woo certain money giving parties????
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AirTester In reply to dipsomaniac [2006-06-18 11:26:17 +0000 UTC]
i'd definitely say, in order to woo these certain money giving parties, to cater to what they will want to see, while keeping true to what makes you, you as an artist... obviously if it's commercial work you're after, any experimental fine artsy stuff won't exactly appeal to them, and hence, they will turn you out in the cold! cruel bastards. but you've got a whole range of really awesome artwork to show off, if there's any pieces you have that can be incorporated into commercial work (a lot of those tafe tasks from janes class come to mind!), or even appeal to individuals due to it's uniqueness (something they would want, something different!) then chuck it all in! if you have any personal favourite pieces, throw them in... conceptual work is good as well to show your processes, and also, if you want to advertise yourself using a style you're most comfortable with, then go with that. i know it would seem obvious that quality would go over quantity, but i've noticed when i have just put in a few of my best pieces of artwork to show a potential employer, that they'll always flip through it really quick, and it looks like (and they think) you don't have much to show (stupid really, if they actually looked closely at the pictures, but they're all really stupid so you gotta dumb your approach right down). people really like a big book thing to flip through with lots and lots of pretty pictures... the idiots. they are impressed if you have a lot to show, somehow it comes across that you've had more experience, which is totally irrelevant. anyhoo, i suggest, get out as MANY pics that you are happy to show, and put your best, favourite pieces in the front (first impressions thing), then peter off to the less outstanding things in the back (but still all contribute to what makes you this particular artist). show off your photoshop skills (coz you're awesome), your character designs, your observational sketches.... that poster advertisement you did should be near the front to show your style can be used as paid work. that sort of thing. hope this helps! good luck!
