An old AC arc welder and a Miller 180 mig. Never really knew much about the specs, just how to use them.

Check the roller on the wire feed. I had the same problem, and that's because I had the roller set for .030, when really I had smaller wire in there (.024) that wouldn't catch.

Hold off on ordering that steel - I may have found a place locally that will sell specialty metals. New West - check them out (on Higgins). Their site seems alright, though I don't know what you had planned on buying. Shoot me an email with a time that works for you.
Nice knife, by the way. You'll have to show me how to make one of those.

I will have to give these guys a call, see what they can do, I would deffinetly preffer to get local stuff. I unfortunatly will probably be to busy with school for a few weeks, though This Weekend Saturday may and I mean may work. I will show you how to make a knife if you show me how to make one of those fancy roses,

thanks for the favourite , you must be like me , without a power hammer if one of your tools is pain threshhold , just how long can one sustain bashing metal in a day ?

Thanks for the props! And yes, Zelda is a seriously awesome game. Kudos on your good taste.
As for the spice rack, 'twas made for friends of mine who gave me the jars to measure around and accommodate. I liked them, too, and I think I still have their ground cloves around here somewhere...

Haha hey better late then never, And yah if you have a guy willing to sell coal i would more than likely be in. I have really been trying to learn forge welding, but it seems very very hard in gas forges. I run a pan forge and a gas forge depending on what i need be doing, but so far the pan forge in using charcoal that i made form some poplar trees and 2x4 scraps, it gets hot enough and i have done some welding (very randomly) but it burns through so fast its hard to keep a hot spot, that and it don't have any left, nor any wood left.

Wookie, in my experience, charcoal just doesn't produce the necessary core heat long enough to forge weld. Also, the single most important things RE: welding tend to be how you scarf your metal, and the flux you use. Borax, my friend, is shit. For lap welds, you want a silica base with iron filings and for bundles you want a greasier anhydrous borax. Both, incidentally, can be gotten from Centaur Forge in Wisconsin fairly cheaply. I recommend 'Cherry Heat' flux for a decent all-purpose.
As for your forge, I see no reason why that forge wouldn't work, provided you had coal. So try the Home Hardware in Selkirk. Buy a bag if they've got some in, and I'll show you how to forge weld. Seriously, won't take more than an afternoon.

Oh man that would be amazing if you could teach me how to forge weld, What i eventually wanna do is get into pattern welded blades, but if you could even teach me a simple lap weld that would be amazing. My school schedule gives me tuesdays from 1 off, if that works for you, Or of course weekends. I suppose I will be needing to get that coal first though, I will let you know when i get it, and let me know what times work for you, I am really excited to be learning from someone who knows in person rather than reading about it,

Well, I've got a little bit of coal laying around - enough for welding purposes, anyway. My email's listed above, so send me your phone number and we can co-ordinate something. I'll be busy as sin very shortly, so the sooner the better would work for me. Cool?

Long-handled hammers with heavy heads mean serious work. Know all about it. Been a long time though since I swung one of those. I was very pleased to see the flower forms posted on your site. Stay in touch as you can, Smitty

Hey a fellow Manitoban! I didn't even realize when I added you. That is pretty cool. Well now that i realize this I have to ask. Gas or coal? I love useing coal but have a hard time finding it, so I opted for gas.

Dude! Had no idea you needed coal! Sorry, I've been away for a while (so long that I no longer understand how to upload photos onto this site).
If you need coal, call Selkirk Hardware. They supply Lower Fort Garry and it's lovely black bituminous for forge welding. Runs about...$80 a bag? Thereabouts, anyhow.
Failing that, I may know a guy willing to sell some of his personal cache. Lemme know.

Hey fellow 'toban!
To answer your question: I use both. Mostly coal, because forge-welding isn't possible with gas. That said, it's nice for anything else, provided you can keep the scaling to a minimum.
Strangely, coal is easier to come by for me, as I'm yet to purchase a gas forge. Thing is: it's expensive. Like, 80$ a bag, which is not cool. Thankfully, I'm usually getting paid to demonstrate, and that's when I make most of my stuff - on someone else's dime.

What are your sources for coal? Like where specifically do you get it. Well I wouldn't say its not possible to forge weld with gas, (I have done it) Its deffinetly harder than coal saying that though. It deffinetly scales more. Yah 80 bucks a bag is steep, though worth it though i would think. I only really plan to use it for forge welding. well i hope we can keep in touch, Maybe even a visit to eachothers shop sometime. Happy forging!
