I learned to ride H/J and I love to jump, but the Friesans are really dressage horses. Since I help train them, I try to stick to dressage work with them. My position will always be more hunt seat, too many years of muscle memory there. How about you?

hah, yeah it is hard to switch over.
Most of my riding career has been trail riding and basic...english.....but the past three years I've been doing dressage. I love it. I've only been to one dressage show, but I placed third in both classes on a 3 year old horse that had never been in a dressage show before either, so I was pretty pleased with that!

Very cool! Congrats! I showed on my college Equestrian Team but decided I didn't like it and went back to just for fun. Most of the Friesians I'm riding now are between 3 and 5 years old, though the stallions tend to be a bit older. I do miss jumping a lot. I was doing some cross-country stuff in college and I miss the thrill of clearing a four-foot fence. Ah, well. Someday I'll have my own.

Are you training the Friesians or are you just riding them for fun and because they need ridden?
Ohh I've never done cross country but that's something I would loooove to do. I've done a little bit of jumping but I'm definitely not experienced there. This summer I'm going to be a working student at a stable up in Maine and the trainer/instructor there said I'm going to be jumping a lot of her TBs. really looking forward to that!

Kind of both. I do ride for fun, but all the horses I ride are for sale and usually are going to people who want to show. They're all very young horses and while I try to keep it relaxed, they do need a lot of work learning what's what. They usually have a good basic training (some have shown in Europe and even have points before getting here) but there's still a lot for them to learn. I do a lot of canter work since they often don't understand what you want (especially walk-->canter transitions). The mare I've been riding is very smart and a sweetie but when you ask for a canter she's still "Oh, faster, okay I'll go into a reallyfasttrot", then eventually she'll realize "Ooooooh, canter, gotcha." She also tends to be unbalanced at the canter and needs to learn not to fall so heavily to the inside. I swear one day she's going to fall over. In the walk/trot however, she has a beautiful neck arch/inside bend and leg-yields to the fence almost effortlessly. She's going to be a beautiful dressage mare. Some of the others I've ridden haven't figured out they have four feet yet, which is particulary fun the the canter (cross-firing). So fun, but training, too.

Your cantering issues sound like my Arabian's cantering issues. She'll be 4 this year and I'm just getting her to the point where she'll break to the canter without trotting much faster but she would MUCH prefer to trot faster.
Do you ride every day? The place where I board my horses there aren't a lot of people there that ride consistently, so it's kind of frustrating for me because my mom doesn't want me riding by myself so I have to wait for someone to get there and then that person doesn't always stay there real long. And usually if I do get to ride no one is there long enough for me to ride two horses so I'm stuck riding only one So I don't always get to ride as much as I want to.

I wish I rode every day. The place I ride is far form where I live so, though I can go whenever I want, I usually only have time on Sundays. Whenever I have a weekday off work (which is rare) I try to get up there.
Ah, yes, it is not safe to ride alone. Which I do sometimes, but I carry my cell phone and my BF knows when I should be back by, just in case. Actually the last time I was alone, I *did* fall, *and* I hit my head, but I had my helmet on so I was okay. WEAR YOUR HELMET! So many people where I ride don't. I broke one once in a fall.
I took Linke (the mare) out around the property and found out she's very dainty. It was muddy and the whole time you could tell she was like "Oh my God, my feet are wet and muddy. Ew." She loves the bath, though.
