Thank you so much for taking a look at my Lady of the lake, I'm so happy that she appealed to you. What was it about her that attracted you? Do you happen to also be a Witcher fan like me? She is a secondary character in the Witcher games and was really fun to paint, especially all the water effects.
You're welcome to check out more of my work if you like or if you're an avid art appreciator you can take a peek at all the art features I make to showcase other artists' art.
Have a great and inspired day and keep being awesome! Also your dolls are absolutely awesome!

It was the pose, the light, the surreal idea of an underwater fight where every move would be slowed down but look more graceful. I haven't looked into the witcher games yet. Is the picture based on a screenshot or have you come up with the whole idea by yourself? That pose must have been extremely hard to do...

Thank you for looking into my artdolls. I've just spent a month of work on evolving an armature that is immitating the real bone and joint structure of an animal as close as possible. Now there will be a lot of creatures that are using the new base. They will be flexible and lifelike but solid and robust at the same time.

I like that your making art features. If you're including my artdolls one day I'd much appreciate the support.

Thank you for the compliments and I'm glad you could enjoy the piece even when you aren't a fan of the game It's not a screenshot, but I used an art doll to come up with the pose. It was really interesting to try out something new that I hadn't seen before. A lot of people seemed to enjoy it, too. But the hardest part by far was the lighting, that was really tricky to get right even with a lot of references.

Doll making is something I don't understand much about but yours are definitely impressive and super cute. Your work should really get more recognition and I'd definitely include it in one of the features.

That's all the more amazing if you've used an artdoll and came up with the correct lighting by yourself.
Thank you for helping me get some exposure. I very much appreciate it.

Your work is really outstanding. Your very welcome. I'm trying to improve my graphite portrait skills at the moment. I'll call myself lucky if I achieve this effect in one of my portraits one day. Hair and contrast are my main problems at the moment I'd much appreciate any tips/ tutorial links/ books that helped you get to that level.

Thanks for the kind comment, I'm happy you like my work, I'm a fan of your work too. I'm self taught over a very long period. I started drawing at the age of 6 which was in 1966 and just developed my own techniques.
Here's a list of what I use:

Pencils: Faber Castell 9000 series B, 2B,4B,8B. I have three of each of these pencils, sharp, medium and blunt. Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B (for black backgrounds) Tombow mono mini eraser, scalpel (to cut Tombow to a sharp edge) Putty eraser or Blu Tack, Small & medium tortillions and blending stumps, Donegan OptiVISOR jewellers magnifiers, Bristol board 250gm. I use different pressures to control the value of each pencil. I like soft lead because it blends easier than hard lead. I also use the grid method.
Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for your kind comment and advise. I suppose I simply need to put more time and practise into shading. I have pretty much the same material as you... but my drawings don't turn out half as nice. I keep starting of too light and when I try to darken the unlit side of the face I always mess up the eye... and I loose the likeliness in the end. I never quiet know how dark I should get with the face. It's those tricks that the eye plays us that get me every time I try to draw a realistic portrait. I'd be much better at drawing an animal (which can't complain about likeliness).. but it bothers me that I keep messing up human portraits

Do a Google search for Edward H. Adelson.  There's a chess board illustration he's done that highlights how a value will appear to change depending on what is next to it. Square A and B are the same exact value in this illustration. If we're aware of this optical illusion, half the battle is won. I spend quite a while analysing before I put pencil to paper. Don't be afraid to do a test before committing to the actual drawing.

I know the illustration and I know that I can never trust my eyes... but still I don't know what shades to use. I suppose it comes with practise. I've spent another 10 hours on my latest drawing and I'm slowly getting the contrast and shading right. The thing is that I watch other artists getting it right from the very first time while I go through endless trial and error with each drawing. You know.. I thought there must be a shortcut trick to blend out the optical illusions

Don't lose heart, it's all down to practice and observation, the more you do the better you get at it. My drawing went through a big change a few years back. I started to realise I was over complicating things by using too many pencils. It took both sides of a 20 sheet pad of Bristol card covered in various experiments to find the pencil combination that worked for me. (luckily I make my living elsewhere…drawing is a hobby!) That process took around four months and by the end of it, I had more conference with values than ever before. I didn't do one drawing through that process, I just fine tuned my knowledge of how to nail values and make a decission once and for all, which pencils worked best for me. Having said all that, I still make mistakes LOL!!! We're all still learning.

AtelierKunz In reply to keithmore2000 [2014-11-28 17:58:40 +0000 UTC]

Good to know. If you stop learning and improving your drawings probably loose their impact. It all comes down to practise in the end. I've ordered a couple of drawing books that might help.. let's see how that turns out. I should do that value practise that you mentioned aswell... It doesn't sound too interesting but in the end it's worth the effort if you don't have to bother with every new drawing. Luckily I'm a hobby artist too... wouldn't sell much with my spending 4 months with each drawing
