# About me
I am a spiritual skinner, tanner, and crafter of animal remains, with ultimate respect for the materials I work with. I do not hunt or trap, but proudly support both industries provided the parties involved follow state laws and basic morals. I understand the value of human interference in the ecosystem, as well as our inherent involvement and ultimate responsibility to reciprocate appropriately. I refuse to shadow myself from suffering and reality in efforts to discover truths. If you have information or questions, do not hesitate to comment or shoot me a note. I will gladly give information and details, including photos, of anything you may be curious about, even if your interest is not to buy.I am a pagan following a reconstruction of the Lithuanian faith, Romuva. Ancestors, trees, fire, food and other elements of life are sacred to me.
Everything is alive.
"I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not just as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow."
--Fred Bear
I did not kill the animals that I work with, but I take personal responsibility for their deaths.
Do not hesitate to ask me anything, be it about methods, morals, or anything else! If you have an opposing opinion, I am more than happy to participate in intelligent discussion -- but not an argument. Rude, insensitive, troll/etc comments or notes will be ignored and hidden.
I am located in Wichita Kansas, USA.

I feel deeply identificated with your work.
I live in a city but I like animals very much. I love dogs. When I stumple upon the mangled remains of a dog killed by a car y feel really sad.
One day I took the jaw of a dead young dog and did a piece of art with it. I did it as a respectful tribute to the dead animal. The piece was called "For the love of God". My main hobby is painting and glass knapping, but I like this kind of art too.
Do you know Damien Hirst?

That is exactly the sort of occasion that drew me to this form of art. Working with the remains, things that are still alive lose the impression of immortality which brings a greater understanding and appreciation. The work is intense and asks a lot of questions, bringing about deep introspection, and that what makes it one of the most powerful and misunderstood arts out there, in my opinion. There is much to be learned from the deceased, in many ways. But so often, just glancing at things like this invokes the "gag reflex" created by man's self-inflicted removal from the origins of food, clothing, jewelry, and other things taken for granted. It is removal from our environment. Honestly, I think everyone should at least dabble in it briefly to have that memory of connection to something dead. It's refreshing to have someone not actively involved still have that experience.
And yes, I am familiar with Damien Hirst, only the most wealthy artist in Britain Haha, I can't say I'm well versed in his works, but I'm familiar with it and admire it.

Don't worry. I really enjoyed and your reply. Your work is a little like Hirst's, that's why I asked.
You leave me thinking and I'll surely look forward to look at your work and learn more from it (:

Not a whole lot of people are willing to take life head-on, and face it for what it is, instead of what we would like it to be.

AtypicalAnimal In reply to Shriss [2013-02-07 04:20:54 +0000 UTC]
Well, I feel that when I'm dealing with remains, I'm looking right at death; death is a product of life, so I like to understand life as best I can to feel connected to my art. It'd be unfair to those that suffered if I turned my head just because I could. And those that ignore the gruesomeness of reality, I realize, also lose sight of its beauty.
I like to think that one day, most people will realize this. That's one of the few potentially untrue things I indulge myself in, funnily enough.

Fear, I think, once you touch base with death you lose a lot of fear. Scared people can be controled easily. People should not allow themselves to be frightened/controlled so easily. Death isn't that bad.

AtypicalAnimal In reply to Shriss [2013-02-07 22:32:52 +0000 UTC]
I disagree in a way. Death is the final frontier. It's the end of the road, game over. We can discuss the afterlife as much as we like -- I do believe in an afterlife myself -- but in the end we simply cannot know. Humans fear pain and the unknown, and death has the highest potential to combine those two things into one final consequence. It manifests the definition of loss. Thus, I think besides torture of any sort, death can and usually is the most powerful force man can fear.
That being said, I do agree that people can fear death disproportionately. There is a certain level of healthy anxiety but at the point where you lose control, you have gone too far. Death is the very end of life and all other fears, but that doesn't mean you can't make peace with it or, in many cases, even welcome it. The situation is the critical element.
So there is reason to fear death. But not to let it control you.

What about curiosity? I wonder if I will be able to approach death with curiosity when my time comes.

AtypicalAnimal In reply to Shriss [2013-02-07 22:53:29 +0000 UTC]
Well and again, there are many cases where death is welcomed for a variety of reasons. Depression, the need for release from disease, or curiosity can all fall into that. But clearly you aren't overwhelmingly curious, or you'd have committed suicide by now just because you couldn't wait to find out

Shriss In reply to AtypicalAnimal [2013-02-07 22:56:35 +0000 UTC]
hahaha, no I'm curious about a good many things! I will satisfy my interest in life first, I'm comfortable knowing my curiosity about death will eventually be fulfilled.

AtypicalAnimal In reply to Shriss [2013-02-07 23:17:39 +0000 UTC]
Heheehe, exactly. But while it's a good attitude to approach death with curiosity, as I hope to, I think I'd be a little sad knowing my time of exploring this vast world is over. That's why I would fear death -- because it might mean the end of discovery here. I do think hope there is discovery beyond death, though.

I actually only come across rabbits at rendezvous, really. But Shriss breeds and skins her own rabbits, you can go see what pelts she has up for sale

I'm more a seller of wild animal pelts

Ah yes, I'm already watching her
Wild animals pelts I truly am interested in, but, living in Canada, It's very hard to get the furs I would like. Rabbits are always a safe bet though, as they are considered "domestic" and can be shipped into Canada just fine .
Thanks!

AtypicalAnimal In reply to Cappies [2013-02-20 01:39:18 +0000 UTC]
Well, if you find out what pelts are legal for me to ship to you, I'd give you a discount on any stuff you buy in return for that information They are all legally trapped and processed furbearers. While there are laws concerning bears and wolves and such, the animals I deal with are common so even within the states I haven't really seen much law surrounding any of them..

Cappies In reply to AtypicalAnimal [2013-03-11 17:19:29 +0000 UTC]
Ya, Canada is epic-strict about their fur laws, even within our own country O_o
That is a very generous offer, thank you I have been researching, but to no avail yet, at least online...
Finding proper and clear information on shipping laws for fur and animal parts is like pulling teeth, so I might just go on a phone journey, and call my provinces ministry of natural resources office. I expect to do a lot of waiting on hold, and a lot of transfers... Let's just hope it's toll free
