Hey Brian.  I posted a video by Tim Vigil you might like.  It's in my Journal.  It's long (70 mins).  It's the last in a series of three.  The other two are at my Youtube channel and I'll post them later.

Hey Brian.  Good move changing your user name to your real name.  makes it much easier for people to find you!

Just thought I'd let you know that I FINALLY located an illustrated version of Gary Martin's book on scribd.com - the one were he has many different inkers tackle the same pages.  Very interesting.  Frankly, though, I was hoping it would be a little more technical about strokes.  The little bit at the beginning was okay, but I was hoping the whole book would be that way!  Lol.

Hey, Brian.  I inherited a drawing table that looks a lot like yours.  Has the same base, but no criss-cross supports.  Instead, has a straight bar across.  The board has two metal arcs to adjust the tilt; they look like they should work with a crank or locking mechanism on the supports, but those pieces are missing.

They guy who had the board jerry-rigged it to work.  I'm wondering if we have the same board?

I found a catalogue that pictures it new   sta.sh/01qbi6x1e73g

lol!  So Sorry!  Really.  I gave a warning in the journal that it's about one and 1/2 hours long.  Must have forgotten to add that when I passed it to you.

Hope it didn't eat up your studio time.  Even if it did, the gain will out weigh the loss. You can check out other demos by him on Youtube - most are a LOT shorter.

A quick one is up. I have 3 pages that I am inking now. Four kids and a job that never ends, output isn't what I would like! Sketch something everyday- just not worth posting.

Sol-Caninus In reply to Brian-Park [2013-05-12 13:33:06 +0000 UTC]

LOL! It's all worth posting, at least for those of us who know to invest in the process, not the product. And the more it bugs you to post what you think is not really representative of your talent and ability, the more you'll press to show off the real you. Hehe.

Sometimes, after a long stretch of no posting, I just grab a random sheet of practice paper from the hopper and post it before I can inhibit the impulse. A few days later, I'm so disgusted with myself that I'm posting four or five pieces that overshadow it. Don't judge yourself. (Let us do that - nyuk-nyuk). Just put it out there! (You can always scrap or delete later, right?)

Second pic posted. This time using only a brush. Tried to do more with the cape around the head to make the face stand out more. Let me know what you think.

I see what you're doing with it and I like the technical exercise of comparing brush with pen. This is really the only way to find out what each is good for in your hand. Some people use pen to get a quick handle on controlling the lines. They use pen as a model for brush inking, switching to brush to copy the pen lines until they can make those pen lines almost the same with a brush. Takes a long time, but I think it's the way to go if you plan to do this the rest of your life. hehe. From what you say about it, sounds like you have a natural affinity for brush. (Most people feel more in control with pen.)

As far as my notes on tonal scheme and framing, nothing changed.

You're focused on technique and instrument handling, which is my personal obsession. Nothing wrong with that, especially when you're making progress. But do think about composition and especially framing and tonal schemes. The tonal scheme is the single most important element of composition. Principles of composition are key. Technique is the least important part of drawing, which is why masters "forget" about it. (Go figure.)

The way to make the face stand out is throw black behind it. Frame it. Create contrast. Where black and white meet creates contrast that draws the eye. It's biologically hardwired into our brains to focus first on sharp contrast. So make the greatest contrast at the center of interest. That's the rule of thumb.

Welcome back! I know how it feels. I came back after about 15 years off. Just dig in and let it snowball!
Your photo and explanation about your workspace is touching. (BTW) I hope you're a lefty, because otherwise that lamp is on the wrong side of the board - casting shadows on your work )
