Hard to say, it really depends on what part of the country you're thinking of going too. Canada is a BIG country so climate and culture varies depending on which province you're going to. For example asking a person from Québec about British Columbia is kind of like asking a Japanese person what it's like in India, it's the same land mass but there's a whole lot of land in-between. The majority of people in Quebec speak French, but despite being taught French in school the majority of Canadians outside of Quebec can't speak French very fluently, if at all. Personally I can barely remember how to count to 10 in French.

I'm from southern Ontario near Toronto which is actually warmer and further south then several US states, Washington, Montana, and the rest of the northern most US states are further North then where I live. The majority of Canada's population lives in the south of the country relatively near the US boarder, so the idea that Canada's colder is a bit of a misconception. Well unless you're planning on going to Nunavut, but I'm guessing your not going that far north.

If you’re from Switzerland, like your profile says, then you actually live further North then I do so your winters are probably a little colder then ours.

Most Canadians can go hang out on a beach during the summer if they want to ...or hide inside with the air-conditioning on and complain about how hot it is...

Really in all honesty Canada's not that much different from the US, at least not where I live, probably because the majority of Canadians do live so close to the US boarder, and so much of our entertainment is produced there. From what I understand our schools are cheaper then in most other countries. I had two friends in college who came from outside the country as international students, one from the US near Chicago, the other from Brazil, both of who came here for the less expensive education. Canada is generally less crowded then most other countries. Despite Canada's size several US states have higher populations then our entire country does. Though how that compares to Switzerland I have no idea... Switzerland has a lower population then Canada, but Canada is huge in comparison. We have lakes the size of your entire country, so I'd imagine Switzerland is generally more crowded. Though again it depends on where exactly in Canada you're going, the city of Toronto's just as crowded as most other large cities around the world.

It seems to be the general consensus on both side of the boarder that Canadians are friendlier, more polite, and maybe more relaxed then American's.

I think what's best about Canada is its variety. We have large busy cities, and small farming towns. In the summer you can relax on the beach, in the winter you can go snowboarding. You can spend a day shopping in the city, or wandering down a forest trail. Canada has mountain ranges and prairie where the land is as flat as a table top. You can find people living here from every part of the world, my parent's are British, my girlfriend's father comes from Lebanon, and her mother the Netherlands. There are large Asian communities and shopping centers which if you're into manga I'm sure you'd enjoy wandering around. There’s not a bookstore in Canada you can’t find a few manga in. In most towns you can find restaurants from every part of the world. If you go to school here you'll have classmates from all different backgrounds and I can guarantee you that you won't be picked on or excluded for being "foreign". Canadians are all a little weird and different so we're pretty accepting and good humored. As far as I know the Swiss have a good reputation with Canadians, the general impression of the Swiss is that you're friendly, hardworking, and reliable.

Your experience of Canada will vary a lot depending on where in the country you travel too, but wherever you go you'll be welcome here.

So your parents are not completely wrong we are kind of like the US, but colder. Just not that much colder, and maybe we're a bit warmer of heart and spirit. You'll definitely be welcome in Canada.
