They do... absolutely NOTHING! It's a little llama icon at the top right corner of your user profile. Depending how many llamas do you have, it's colour can change

If I remember correctly, your llama changes into Super llama (that has an cape) when you get 10 llamas.

You can give them to any one you want, but you can give only 1 llama per person. You can even give them to random people. They sometimes send you a llama back.

Click the "Give" button with the gift box in the top right corner of the user's profile you want to give it to, and choose the give a llama option.
