Your pieces are interesting I thought about making a stacked series like you did but I ran out of time in class and since I dont have my own studio...

Well you get the picture

CindyMorley In reply to Lozoyam [2009-01-06 19:33:00 +0000 UTC]

oh I understand... I graduated years ago but I continue taking classes so I have access to the studio space

Stacked pieces are far more fun than I ever thought they would be. I like pushing them to see how far I can take it and still have a stable pot.

Yay! Love your gallery, BTW.

So, I was reading your journal and saw you go to school in Iowa... I didn't know much about your school so had to check it out online and I gotta say I'm impressed... what do you think of it as a potter? I'm thinking about going back to Grad School in a couple years...

sgraffittoman In reply to CindyMorley [2008-05-08 14:53:42 +0000 UTC]

I get to work pretty close with the grad students here, and I have also been here for two semesters now and the only advice that I can give about Iowa is that you really have to come and see it to understand it!? Right now there is a lot of free reign over the studio for any student that really wants to work in clay, we get to mix our own clay and glazes, fire our own kilns. Space can sometimes be an issue sometime, however thats not the case for Grad students... The are loads of rumors flying around about staff changes and remodeling... I won't comment on what I don't know. I seriously consider staying here for Grad school every once and a while but I think that once I get my BFA I might just go and start a studio, I would love to teach and go to Grad school but life its a strange coarse and I don't know where its leading me?

I don't know if you have any specific questions about the studio I could answer them.

Thanx for expressing interest in the University of Iowa.

Staff changes... hum, that could be good or bad... 15 or so years ago here at UofA we had a fabulous "pottery" professor (who I initially trained under). He retired after like 30 years here a few years after I started taking classes. then we went through a period of people coming in for a couple years then leaving and the program went to hell... Then about 5 years ago we got our current professor (who just got tenure so she'll be here a while) and we now have a very "ceramic" concept-based program. I'm trying not to be derogatory, but is difficult being a potter and working in a very non-pottery-centric program. However, i gotta admit it has forced me to broaden my skills.

anyway, back to Iowa... How many grad students do you have at any given time? Any thoughts/advice into applying there for grad school? It wont be for a couple years (when my husband finishes his masters) but I'm trying to plan ahead As it is right now, would you consider the program is geared more towards pottery or ceramics or a good mixture of both? When Nicholas Kripal (from Temple U) was here last fall for a symposium, he advised me to find a school that focused on "the vessal"...

Thanks!
Cindy

I would say that the department has no more 8 students and the focus of any of their work is a huge variety... If you are not going to be coming for another couple of years I think that would be good timing, but its so hard to tell. Iowa has always been more oriented toward wood firing and other atmospheric surface treatments, but don't let that discourage you!? Like I said if you were to just come and visit you would understand first hand... I don't know what you are planning on doing in you future but as for me I have learned so much in my first year as an undergrad that I might just leave with my BFA and seek funding to open my own studio... I feel that confident after working with all of the faculty and students here. If I were going to consider going to Grad school I would find it really hard to find a better program then the on here...

CindyMorley In reply to sgraffittoman [2008-05-12 13:48:53 +0000 UTC]

discourage me, heck, that is what I'm looking for Wood firing and other atmospheric firing is probably the main area that is lacking in my education... (well that, and molecular formula) We do one or two soda/salt firings each semester, but that just isn't nearly enough. There has been talk for a few years now of building a wood kiln, but it just hasn't materialized...

I actually had my own studio for a while, but found it difficult to make make ends meet. I HATE marketing my work.... I also found that I really needed to be around other artists to get inspired. I find I am at my best and most creative when working with others. I want to teach. I'm always the one that everyone in the studio comes to with questions, so why not get paid for it

Wonderful,i'm just obsessed with my passion for iron. But also,a small set-up would be very useful for a craftsman in any medium.Just like many farms had a small forge set up,to save a trip to town,so a potter may bang up a quick set of tongs,or the like.
But your ceramics are really neat, and,i'm sure, take up all the time that one can reasonably spare. So in some ways it's best for all of us to stick to one thing, but the proselytising zeal overcomes me at times...(fairly common in ironworkers).
