Thanks for adding my viking props to your favourites. New pair of winingas finished just yesterday so kit looks a little bit different in nowadays.
Still need to find or make better shoes and some kind of cloak before summer evens, but all other parts feel already quite nice compared to my earlier viking clothing projects..

Winingas are the wraps that go around your legs, right? I thought they looked pretty good...

Yeah. But my first leg wraps are not long enough if i want to put bottom ends inside the shoes like in the old traditional way. New winingas are now just the right size and also the traditional herringbone pattern is more visible.
Lol.. Also my original hooks looked quite simple, so I had to engrave more complex ornament for new ones.
New wraps look already very fine, but i have not taken any pictures, because i maybe have to sew also some red, blue or yellow thread on the edges or something like that. Then my "bottom half" fit more better with tunics color scheme.
I maybe need also more flashy looking pants if i really want to turn that kit to look like real iron age nobleman or wealthy trader. There will be also few ornamental knifes, new purses, rus kaftan, pointy hat with fur trim and other details like that in next few years if everything goes well.

Hi, I'm a novice metal worker and I was wondering if I could ever ask you for advice on projects or tools.
-Great work by the way.

What kind of questions did you have?

Well, I mostly make fire pokers in my own forge, and I'd like to start expanding on what I make (it also may be worth noting I sell my work at a local farmers market). I've made candle holders, bottle openers, hooks, a few knives, and I've done a little work with sheet metal. I guess my question is what do you think would be good for me to try and make, and if you have any advice for said projects. I'd really like to start going into blade smithing more, but I imagine without a proper teacher I would be doing a lot of trial and error or have to start on very simple projects.

I would say what you want to focus on is trying you hand at making some tongs. Having the right pair of tongs can make or break a project sometimes, and most of the forging skills necessary to make tongs are fairly simple, it's just a matter of executing them properly. I haven't looked at his book in a long time, but I seem to remember that Jack Andrews has a section on tongmaking. He won't steer you wrong.

what kind of metal would you recommend for a pair of tongs, any good for a beginner?

Oh, any old junky steel will do. Rebar works in a pinch but can be annoying because there is a range of quality even in single pieces due to the way they make the stuff. The only thing I would say to definitely avoid is anything that has been galvanized / zinc-coated, it's nasty stuff. Most steel with zinc on it will look like a neutral grayish surface color, sometimes with odd "frost" patterns on the surface. You'll know it if you put a piece of the stuff in a fire and you start getting weird, whitish-yellow smoke and an awful smell. That is the zinc burning off and under no circumstances should you breathe it in. At best, you'll feel irritated in the sinuses, and at worst... well, let's just say you shouldn't use it.

I actually made the mistake of using a piece that was galvanized, a part of my anvil is still stained from it. also, I have a copy of the new edge of the anvil, along with a couple of other books.

Yuck. The stain on the anvil will wear away eventually.
Stick with those books, you'll learn a lot.
