I don't know whether to be happy you tried the series, or horrified that you prefer that whiny-ass doofus. You may certainly blame it on me, however!

Yuuki actually gets half-badass later on in the series, dunno how far you've seen. (I only watched a little of the anime.) Oh, and don't forget, Kaname's her ancestor, too! XD

Whiny? You gotta remember I liked Alistair too. Yes yes, Zero angsts like there's no tomorrow but at least his motivations are honest and sincere. Kaname strikes me as a manipulative bastard. I know that's some people's cup o' tea but it ain't mine. Wait a sec...Kaname's her WHAT NOW?!?! Ew, double squick!

(I made it to the part where Zero's a full blown vampire and now in no danger of falling to Level E...ie Kaname let him bite him.)

Yeah, the original version of my last reply had a jab about Alistair. >.> Of course I remember. That's okay, I guess, you can have the whiny ones; I'll take the smexy sarcastic bastards.

Though Kaname's not really sarcastic, or a bastard. He plays politics because he has to. My only complaint with him is that he gets overprotective/sheltering of Yuuki to a point that's almost condescending later. I always liked him a hell of a lot more than Zero, though, because he's less selfish in the details of his actions if not the overarching motivations. He notices and responds to people's feelings around him, and usually in a positive manner unless there's a specific reason otherwise. Zero just kind of stamps his feet and glowers like a child through everything. I don't have a lot of patience for unproductive angst - he could do a lot of good if he'd get the hell over himself, but he won't.

I can see that Kaname HAS to play politics and that he has his reasons for doing things a certain way. But from what I've seen, sure he cares about Yuuki but he's also treating her like a pawn. I dunno, I just don't think their chemistry is that great.

Not that the chemistry with Zero is much better. You're right, sometimes he does angst to the point of ridiculousness but I can at least understand where he's coming from and why he would behave the way he does.

All in all, I think all three main characters are pretty boring and one-dimensional. Misaki (from Kaichou wa Maid-Sama) and Winry can kick Yuuki's butt any day of the week. Yuuki shifts from being brooding and pensive to overly cheerful so fast that it comes off as false. There's no real genuineness or extra oopmh to her that makes me care about her as a character. And she keeps doing really really dumb things to put herself in danger and it doesn't seem like she's LEARNING from those mistakes. Misaki learned and changed and grew so I ended up liking her more even if the premise of her series is downright silly.

If you haven't, you should at least watch one episode of the anime for Vampire Knight. If nothing else, the art and animation is GORGEOUS. It's so fluid and beautiful and the music is nothing short of amazing. And Zero is also voiced by my favorite Japanese voice actor (he's done Tamaki from Ouran, Riku from Kingdom Hearts, and Ling from the new FMA...pretty much EVERYTHING).

I have seen a couple of the anime episodes.

...I was scratching my head and trying to compare your comments about Yuuki to what I remembered from the manga, and I think I see where the difference is coming from.

I don't *like* the anime. It's great for all the reasons you said, but its depiction of Yuuki was so far from what I was getting from the manga it totally turned me off. You're completely right - in the anime, she comes off as shifting between extremes WAY too quickly. I don't like her voice actress, and I don't like they way she's portrayed. She's much more of a wayward little girl in the anime; it surprised me that there was such a difference given that in general the anime follows the manga very closely.

So yeah. Might be worth your time to read the manga. It's still definitely possible that you'd have similar criticisms of it, but I really thought the characters were more believable and better-done there.

I don't much care for the anime either. Like I said, it's pretty but after that I quickly run out of good things to say. The pacing sucked, it was long and drawn out and repetitive. And you're right, they made Yuuki look like a quintessential Mary Sue. But I usually at least start out with the anime before I decide whether or not I want to read the rest of the manga. In this case I think I might since from what I've seen, Yuuki doesn't seem THAT bad. (Winry's still my favorite manga girl...but that goes without saying and it's kina hard to top her. ) But yeah, I think I'll give it a shot.

I still think that Kaname/Yuuki is ew ew EWWWWW. ><
