thank you! I find I'm really bad at it... it's difficult to get the right effect with the least layers possible before the paper starts to break down... and I'm so impatient!
Do you work with watercolors much?

Yeah, I've been using them more and more recently. Β What type of paper are you using? Cheaper papers tend not to hold as many layers of color. Nicer papers are more expensive but they're definitely hardier.Β If drying time is too slow for you, you could try a hair dryer to speed it up too.

I bought a stack of Fabriano cold-pressed paper. I love that company usually. I thought it was a good quality, and I'm pretty sure it was at first, but I think recently they've been trying to cater to poor artists and have thus reduced the price but also the quality of their paper...
Thanks for the advice about the hair dryer! I have one stashed away somewhere... I never use it though... might take it back out and dust it off a bit... I'm afraid the larger pools of color will get blown away in a direction I don't want though... do you have that problem? If so, how do you deal with it?

I'm not sure about Fabriano paper, since I've never used it before. If the paper's fine, it might just be a case of waiting for the layers to dry before working into them again?
Oh yeah, don't use the hair dryer when there are pools of water still there for the reason you mentioned (unless you want that effect?). Just far after most of the water has been absorbed and the paper is still damp.

I've gotten pretty decent results with Fluid watercolor blocks, and Canson and Strathmore work okay for me. And everyone recommends Arches, but you have to pay a pretty penny for that.
