Dean, you were my comic book art teacher for a few years in Claremont at the Old School house. My name is Greg Garrow, and it would be cool to hear back from you or if you have a facebook or something. garrow2013@hotmail.com So glad to see that you found so much success. You were an AWESOME art teacher and great with kids, at least that was my experience. Best wishes Dean, and thank you for all you taught me !

-Greg

PS I'm a photographer, so I'm still using some of the same composition and what not I learned back then to take pictures instead of draw them. A photographer is basically a lazy artist if you ask me

Came here looking for the artist who created some stunning illustrations for the latest (as of this moment) The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger graphic novels, and I'm guessing I'm very much on the right profile. Thank you for such a fresh and artistic approach to comic book illustrations (at least, on Evil Grounds that was), looking forward to see more of your works in print. Good luck with everything!

I just finished reading the new Captain America collected book (Castaway in Dimension Z) and I just have to say how much I was blown away by your colors on that. The contrast between the scenes of Steve Rogers as a boy and the madness of Dimension Z is so striking and so appropriate for both timelines. I also especially loved your work on the Avengers. I can mega-zoom in on each panel on the digital version on my iPad and it's fascinating to see the details close up. I love what you do with lighting your scenes. Your use of white lines makes the images jump off the page. You've got some mad coloring skills!

Dude, I've just really taken notice of your work in the pages of Uncanny X-Force (reading the tpbs) and found you on here purely through chance. I really really love your work. Specially that 'sketchy' 'cross-hatched' style of colouring that almost looks like pencil crayon.

I love your coloring, it's beautiful. I was wondering if you could post some tips or a short tutorial on coloring. It would be really helpful would be willing to pay for a book, podcast or dvd if u did it in that form but a forum post will suffice please.

Dean, my passion for comic books and comic art, as well as my own artistic pursuits, has recently been reinvigorated in the past few months and I just wanted to let you know that you work is definitely at the top of my favorites and has greatly inspired me. Although I don't have anything profoundly meaningful to say here, I just wanted to let you know that you have another fan.

Hi Dean, I became a huge fan after a coworker showed me your work on Uncanny X-force. I'm curious as to whether or not you have any dvd's or tutorials on youtube for your color selection. I've honestly never seen comics colored the way you do it and it's a huge breath of fresh air from all the over saturated generic look out there.

Hey Dean, I recently had to colour a cover recreation of a JrJr Spidey cover, I have you credited as the original colourist, but its hard to find online if it was you (Comicvine only mentions Studio F). Could you let me know if I have the credits right for it on your behalf? Many thanks... love your work by the way

No I did not color that one, might have been before I was coloring John. Black Panther was the first time I colored him and anything before that is not me for sure. Thanks for checking tho

One more thing why does marvel switch their artist midway through a story such as switching from ribic to peterson. Or on thor when they started with coipel and then took him out?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DeanWhite In reply to R0B0naut [2012-02-13 18:55:49 +0000 UTC]

I do not know if that is a good example but I know what you mean. Most of the time it comes down to schedule. Either the schedule is to tight or the art takes longer than anticipated. Both happen. No one wants it to but this is a monthly business so the books have to come out.

On the Ultimates Esad finished his arc 1-4 and was able to fit in 5 pages for the next to issues before we went back full time for 7-9 (maybe 10 I just cannot remember) So the script was set up so that would work. Heck I was off of 6 because I just could not fit it in. Hated doing it but that is what happens.

Hope that answers your question
Best
Dean

Dean I just picked up the Ultimates 1-4 and you blow my mind. You and Ribic are the dream team. I havn't been this impressed since ultimate hulk vs wolverine or all star superman. If i won the lottery tomorrow I would buy the rights to DBZ and have You and Ribic do a reboot. Bye bye.

dean-
ive listened/read some interviews with you recently-very informative, quick question, in your process of coloring, ex.the xforce pages, do you have these pages flatted like a normal colorist would want them or do you just go for grey tones freehand and attack?
thanks so much
joey

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DeanWhite In reply to joeyfeldman [2012-01-13 06:37:51 +0000 UTC]

I have them flatted, then make a second flat layer that is just for the panels. I usually start there. Laying in the colors for the panels and working fast and loose. Then tighten it up as I go. Working from General/Big Shapes to Specific/Small shapes. It is how I approach all the books. So yes I use the flats but not at first. First it is just the panel as a whole
