I got my Nikon D50 with a kit lens (18-55mm) for about 600 € (I think it's priced in amazon.com for 600 $) Plus, I have a zoom lens (Sigma APO 70-300mm DG) for about 200 € and the Nikon 50mm 1.8 which is optimal for portraits.
But only the kit lens should be really enough for everybody.
