And I create a base with a H pencil and compass who looks a bit like a shooting target, from this, I start the free-hand work, then I erase the base. This artist I really like have some pictures of her process and i do almost the same (I think a lot of mandala makers came to this idea...) : beinkemen.deviantart.com/

I try to draw everything free-hand, so it interested me, what can be reasonably achieved with enough practice. I train by the motto: "If I can't draw it with a ruler (or else), I won't use it until I can."
So, yes. It helps a lot to know!

yeah definetly, I learned a lot when making that sword, it took me about two months of work squeezed into a little more than 3 weeks.

A drawing of Samus is rarely what you'd expect. The quality seems to be in opposite correlation with the simplicity of the art style. As the art style gets simpler, the quality goes down, which is weird! Yours didn't, so you have my praise!
