Draconus297 In reply to MelTheMemeQueen [2014-08-26 07:29:41 +0000 UTC]

It's not like anime is a specific genre- it covers all variety of subject matter.
It's not like anime has a specific pitfall to it- the only unifying thing to it is a basic guideline for the art style.

Saying that you do not like anime is like saying you don't like anything made under Disney. It's such a blanket term that it boggles the mind that people can have a complete dislike.

Now, if you said you don't like shonen, or school life, or harem anime, or some other modifying descriptor, I could understand it, but in the end you're saying you dislike such a wide variety of things (I've been told that "Firefly" was a ripoff of an anime made several years beforehand) that it speaks volumes about how quick you are to make generalizations.

I don't like anime, period. It is not realistic enough for me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Draconus297 In reply to MelTheMemeQueen [2014-08-26 07:36:53 +0000 UTC]

So, you're saying you don't like anything non-realistic?

That is a massive blanket, and holy hell does it shut you off from some of the most well-written stories of all time.

Believe me when I say reality is overrated.

Sorry to get preachy, but I'm a highly literary person. There is little I love more than a good story, even if it is one I create in my own head to describe utter nonsense.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MelTheMemeQueen In reply to Draconus297 [2014-08-26 07:43:03 +0000 UTC]

I am referring to anime only. I like Family Guy, American Dad, The Simpsons, Futurama, Daria, South Park and more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Draconus297 In reply to MelTheMemeQueen [2014-08-26 07:49:16 +0000 UTC]

Then what sets anime apart?

Surely it isn't the semi-unifying art style.

More relatable story and no big breasted teenage looking girls with huge eyes and high pitched voices.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Draconus297 In reply to MelTheMemeQueen [2014-08-26 08:10:17 +0000 UTC]

That is a cripplingly extreme generalization.

First, I'll address the first and most blatant thing here. The relatability of the story kinda revolves around what the story is to you. I like wilder stories with characters I can feel for- like in my example "Angel Beats!", which for all its extreme concept still revolves around a bunch of teenagers who had shitty yet realistic lives. If you want stories grounded in reality, there are quite a few, mostly in the tamer subgenres, like shojou. I don't really tend to watch these, as I find reality kinda dull (also the reason I don't watch reality TV except in the case of game shows like "Jeopardy!" and "America's Got Talent"), but I'm aware of their existence.

There are tons of anime without focus on what is quite generally referred to as "fanservice", huge eyes is more of a tendency in anime directed at younger audiences (notice how kids draw freakishly large eyes? It's a relatability thing) (more mature anime use smaller eyes), and while I can agree some voice actors/actresses have ridiculously annoying voices, it's like that regardless of medium. For example, I really don't like Gilbert Gottfried's voice- kinda why I avoided "Aladdin" for a while. On the other end of the spectrum, there are some VAs whose voices absolutely rock, also regardless of where you are. If you don't like a VA, you can watch the subbed (subtitled into English) version muted, or the English dub. That's all it comes down to.

"Alchemy"- a minor song from the anime "Angel Beats!" The duet version is beautiful.Β

"Crossing Field"- the original opening theme for the anime "Sword Art Online". Amanda Lee's English translation is beautiful. Here's the middle verse:
"I could never find
Light to guide me through the night
And with one touch
I'd recall
Every memory
All too precious to not hold them all close to me
It's tempting
To close your eyes and turn from the world
But it's bittersweet
Like you've somehow missed a beat
With no restart
When every wish has overlapped
You'll realize if you carry on
With every dawn
Your hesitation fades
All of your scars will disappear
I will become your sword and shield
This crossing field's
The path that we select
If it's our bonds we live by
I will put my
Faith in you"

"If Everyone Cared"- An example of why I believe Nickelback is over-hated. This is one of the most heart-baring, hopeful-for-a-better-future, Β healing songs in existence. To wit:
"And in the end, the fireflies
Our only light in paradise
We'll show the world they were wrong
And teach them all to sing along
Singing hey, man I, I'm alive
Singing hey hey man I, I am alive
If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day where nobody died"

All sappy and emotional? Of course.Β
All very good songs that really deserve more love? Absolutely, beyond all shadow of doubt.Β

I pay attention. I like to have meaning.Β
Even the songs under my banner in Japanese have meaning I can relate to.Β

"My Soul, Your Beats!" is about pretending that everything is fine when the world is crashing down around you.Β
"I Say Yes" is about being ultimately loyal and protective of people you care about.Β
"Inside Identity" carries the message that you should always be yourself, regardless of what other people think.
"Ichiban no Takaramono", though, is about accepting tragedies and, while admitting that they hurt, ultimately moving on.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MelTheMemeQueen In reply to Draconus297 [2014-03-29 08:03:21 +0000 UTC]

I can understand those. I prefer songs with meanings. Songs like Wop have no meaning.

Draconus297 In reply to MelTheMemeQueen [2014-03-29 08:13:52 +0000 UTC]

Now, don't call me a reverse existentialist, but I feel that everything I become involved in needs some sort of meaning. If I do something meaningless, I've wasted time. That is unacceptable.Β
