# About me
My name is Erik Brush (yes it's my real last name. LOL). I am a Danish/American artist.I specialize in pyrography (woodburned art), colour pencil, and airbrush. I have done a huge variety of media but tend to prefer the above styles. Additionally I make a lot of art Jewelry. My main site is erikbrush.com/I started out as a wildlife and fantasy artist, now turned conservationist and shark biologist. I am the author of 2 books "The Sixth Extinction" and "Anthroview" with my third book on it's way. ("The World Enders"). Sharks and protecting the oceans are my main passions besides art. I am a strong advocate for sharks and marine eco-systems as well as a shark biologist and behavioral researcher. I have an extensive background in herpetology as well.
If it's animals or ocean related, I usually have a keen interest. I speak 5 languages, and am a "Photo-realistic" type artist. While I appreciate all art styles and varieties, I am anal retentive about details in my own work.

Thank you very much. The "Prince of the Jungle" woodburn takes a lot of my time, so posting progress is slow. But I am delighted to be able to provide a bit of inspiration and something you enjoy. I do the same with so many other artists. Ouhhhing and ahhhhing over some of the amazing talent I see on this site and others. It's always motivating for me to see what everyone else is doing. I love to see creative talent in visual arts.
And I am doing well. Thank you for asking. How about yourself How is life treating you? I hope very well. Cheers!

Pretty good, I'd say!
If I may ask, do you draw your own designs or are your pyrographies from photographs?Β

ErikBrush In reply to TheTurnerPack [2013-11-01 03:56:00 +0000 UTC]
Some are drawn from memory, others are from photos. I do a light sketch of my subject matter then come in and burn first the outline, then key features, and finally start building in the details, fur, scales, feathers, skin, shading, etc. Much depends on the subject matter. The lion I am working on is from a photograph. The acacia tree is a composite entirely from my head, but using 6 different photos for bark and thorn texture models.

What kind of tool do you use. I use the old standard with no temperature control and I am thinking of trying the newer tools but I am afraid it will be like learning how to burn all over again. Any advice. P. S.Β I love your work. Β

Thank you for the compliments. Sorry that I have been away from the site for a bit. Anyway, I use a simple Walnut Hollow Versa-tool. It does have a rehastat built in for temperature control. But I seldom use this. You can get a dimmer switch and get the same affect.
I think you don't need to relearn with a newer machine if you feel comfortable with what you have been using. I use a universal tip exclusively. I have taught pyrography before to students and have taught them how to use all of the points, but I find that the universal does just about everything. So I never waste time changing out points.
If you do decide to go with a variable temperature machine I would recommend Burnmaster. Their machines are far more affordable than all other brands. They are better made, have built in reset switches in case you blow a fuse, or have a power surge. They accept ALL points from all other brands as well as their own. So you can do a lot with them.
But for myself I love the Iron style burner. It's simple, reliable, and can be mastered to an almost disgustingly detailed level. I also enjoy (I know it's a bit twisted) hearing those who have decried this type of burner as a "beginner/amateur" type of tool drop their jaws in dismay when they learn that all of myΒ work is done with this very machine. LOL. You don't need an expensive machine. You just need to be comfortable with what you are working with and to learn the tricks and techniques.
I hope that this helps. Also if you use the universal tip, clean it with a sponge-backed sandpaper pad. By doing so you will cause the brass to have a slight up-sweep/curve of the blade between the tip and the heel. This prevents the biting that an unaltered universal tip gives you. It's a simple trick, but it will VASTLY improve the movement of the blade over wood.
The main wood I prefer is Birch. You'll get a finer grain and better lines. It's light and compact. Cheers!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IN YOUR 'SECOND LAST PARAGRAPH'; SPONGE-BACKED SANDPAPER PAD?Β HOW BIG/SMALL IS THIS?Β I JUST RUB/CLEAN WITH A FINE GRIT SANDPAPER.Β YOUR IDEA SOUNDS LIKE THE BREAKTHROUGH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!Β THANKS, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.

the foam backed sand paper pads are produced by a company called 3-M that also makes glue and other supplies. It will alter your universal tip to a nice curve on the knife edge. Nahdee if you have a facebook account, look me up on FB and send a friends request. I will send you a picture of what the altered tip looks like compared with a brand new one.
