Halter dresses, kimono jackets and t-shirts are very simple. I'd recommend looking into Simplicity sewing patterns. They're great for beginners and have a fairly decent variety of things to choose from.

well...the only problem with your suggestions is that i am a guy...so the dresses are out...i would love to make a male kimono for myself...then again i wanna make a bunch of samurai garb...i am actully making myself a t tunic atm...gotta love rennaissance re-enactment...lol

Then try costumes - such as robes, cloaks, kimonos etc - you won't find many patterns for men involving kimono unless you're looking at patterns for costumes.
