What's the biggest change you've had from leaving high school?

FrayedDawn In reply to TheBirdsFeathers [2014-08-10 01:56:43 +0000 UTC]
Goodness, that's a loaded question! Part of me wants to say what everyone says, which is about being more independent, but I think it's being able to focus on who you are without being influenced by others. You don't have your parents breathing down your neck, or the opinion your peers have of you weighing down on your shoulders. You can, if you choose to, almost entirely transform who you are. But this doesn't mean you go wild and throw all your parents' advice and what you've learned to the wind (although some college students do and they regret it much later); it's concreting what you believed before about yourself and thriving in what you learn. For me personally, my faith has transformed me and is intertwined with this whole self-identity development. Yeah, it's a difficult time because you get hurt as you grow, but it's by far worth it. Hope this makes sense!

Haha yea it is a heavier thing to ask, I just like hearing lots of different perspectives on it. I remember my parents saying we are the most pure versions of ourselves when we're little; after that, social pressures meld us all into conformity, burying the real 'us' within. The ability to transform as you describe makes it sounds like those pressures relax? That's definitely something to look forward to!
Another potentially load question: what do you think I should do for my last year of high school? Is there anything you regret doing or not doing?

FrayedDawn In reply to TheBirdsFeathers [2014-08-15 02:34:46 +0000 UTC]
Hey, it's good to be prepared! And I wouldn't say that the social pressures relax (in fact, they probably increase, especially around the drinking and partying scene since there aren't any parental eyes on any of it), but I go to a Christian school, so it's actually been a hugely positive experience without that pressure.
Well, I do regret being part of the yearbook committee, haha! But in all seriousness, I'd say to try your hardest not to slack off and to focus on your friendships. You'll be surprised to hear now, but about 99% of the people you talk to now you won't even remember their names a year from now. I see people I considered "friends" from high school occasionally, but I know very little about what they've been up to with their lives. There's only one or two people I still have strong friendships with after my first year of college, and I treasure those a lot.

Maybe those things aren't bad as long as you're being yourself! From an outside perspective, I think they depend more on the college itself (party school vs. a more studious or religious place).
You regret yearbook? Β I always thought that sounded like a fun class! Β And the friendship thing is unfortunate, I've had it partially happen already. Β One year I'll have a class with someone and we'll act like great buddies, and then next year they barely even acknowledge you in the hall. Β After leaving HS I can see how that would happen with a lot more people. Β So much to look forward to! Β Are you saying it's something than can be partially fought if one tries hard enough?

FrayedDawn In reply to TheBirdsFeathers [2014-09-04 14:04:52 +0000 UTC]
Geez, sorry for the late response! I've been over my head busy (but in a good way). Eh, I think there's social pressure regardless of where you go (some good and some bad), so it's just being aware of what's pressuring you and why you're doing what you're doing
Yep, but that could have been because I had an awful yearbook adviser...she was a really cruel woman -shivers-. And that's very true, but you can prevent it somewhat as you're saying. Just keep in touch with the people you really want to be friends with beyond HS!

Nah, you're fine! Fall is usually hard because of starting stuff back up and I'm just as late.
I guess that's what those elementary peer pressure talks were for!
And yearbook just seems like a class where you wouldn't expect to have a bad teacher..?

FrayedDawn In reply to TheBirdsFeathers [2014-12-07 00:52:30 +0000 UTC]
Well, yearbook wasn't exactly a class at my school, but an after-school activity that no one really wanted to do, haha. And that's fine; we're all busy.
