Thanks. I have other art, but I decided just to put the Egyptian things in this gallery in keeping with my fursona.
What are you studying?

Furcadia-ports In reply to Kamose [2007-09-25 00:55:18 +0000 UTC]
on my masters in design and philosophy, currently writing a paper on the affect of symbols on design, using the star as an example and if a symbol can hold such a weight of importance it can be passed on via gentics.
looking to eyptian art and architecture as an example to the importance of the star

That sounds like an interesting thesis, but how do you distinguish between "cultural inheritance" and "genetic inheritance" when considering the importance of symbols? (If a symbol is prominent across generations, is that due to genetic reasons or cultural reasons?) Egyptian culture was fairly static until the New Kingdom, and even then, not much had changed in fashion.

thats what im looking at in my paper, setting forth a series of theories as to possible reasons why, including enforced knowledge whereby something is told over and over from a young age until it becomes engrained, subliminal messaging, culture, religion an genetics. To my knowledge it hasn't ever been explore as to if a symbol or image or indeed knowledge can be passed on via genetics. this is what i really want to prove but my lecturuers are holding me back.
This also links to culture, as... *if* there is a possibility that knowledge can be passed on via genetiics, can culture be engrained also? there is reinforcement via stories, teachings, elders etc, but can the initial instincts be passed on via genetics?
i find it really interesting, ive been looking for examples of other species tha pass down knowledge without a parental presence such as rattlesnakes turtles and penguins. sea turtles are hatched with no parents around them, yet they know where to go, and when they are adult they know where to come back. rattlesnakes know their prey from birth and a baby rattlesnake is more deadly than an adult. penguin parents leave their babies as chicks and return to the sea to feed, when the chicks grow their adult coat they dnt just wander around the ice lost, they know they have to go to the water, even thought hey have never swam before.
they know where to go, and what to do and also return later, travelling over 60miles across a journey they have never been before.
my tutors are holding me back though, they are saying that symbols and knowledge cant be passed on via genetics and that i should leave it and instead study something called semiotics which is the study of symbols but thats not what i want.

Some sources you might want to consider when writing:
The idea that knowledge, skills, and traits gained during life can be passed on genetically was proposed by Lamarck, who lived before Gregor Mendel discovered the mechanics of trait inheritance. (Lamarck's theory of evolution was rendered obsolete by Darwin's theory, which is consistent with our understanding of genetics.)
Carl Jung has popularized the psychological equivalent of that theory, but he was more of a mystic than a scientist. (Carl Jung believed that a collective unconscious explained the prevalence of certain symbols and archetypes across cultures.)

Felorini In reply to Kamose [2007-10-05 07:15:06 +0000 UTC]
If you're interested in reading or researching more on the perils of Lamarckian thinking, you might want to look up Lysenko. He was in charge of Soviet Agricultural Genetics for decades. I find it appropriate that the first three letters of that spell out SAG. Lysenko was a hardcore Lamarckian - and not just in a theoretical sense, he used Lamarck's theory of "inheritance of acquired characteristics" to try to get Russian farms growing better plants, getting better crop yields, etc. The results of his policies were a spectacular failure, it's hard to measure how much Russia lost because of him, or how many years it set them back.

Thanks for the info. The comments about Lamarck were for someone who is working on a thesis about whether certain abstract symbols and/or culture are genetically encoded in humans.
