No prob.

I love mythology creatures, so check my www.pinterest.com/sincubus1982… pages and start giving those underused myths/folklore and cryptids a skin! :-p

Just kiddn, but keep on drawing those creatures, love your South American creatures! Keep it up

I must thank you for your suggestions and your knowledge in myth creatures in general. If you ever want to know some portuguese ones just let me know ^^

Well thanks for the compliment!
And of course i'd like to know all about portuguese monsters! The more I know the better! :-p
If they are just as cool as the Basque ones I found (Aatxe, Gaueko, Tartaro) then they make a great addition to the collection!

The ones that immediately jump to mind are:

Moura Encantada (Enchanted Moura) - one of our oldest and most beloved legends, they're beautiful women bound by a curse to guard particular places and that only show up during certain times of the year. They promise to give their treasure to the person who breaks her curse, but they always fail and their curse is doubled as punishment en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enchante…

Portuguese Werewolf - in our version they're poor souls cursed to run around at night and only attack those who try to stop them (they have to cross 7 hills, 7 cemeteries, 7 churches, etc that night, otherwise they'll die). Though a rare few are really bloodthirsty and will hunt down unbaptized children and other loners they may come across. They usually avoid lit places and streets, or blow the lights off so they can cross
If you have 7 boys born in a row the last is fated to become a werewolf when he turns 13 (and a witch or Peeira in the case of girls), taking off his clothes in the middle of a path (especially a crossroad) at night (usually every friday) and hanging them on the highest tree before assuming a beastly shape (usually of a dog or wolf). Or you can roll around in the dirt of a crossroad (or fall asleep there) at midnight to become the last animal that laid there (which means you can turn in anything from a wolf or a dog to a horse, donkey, boar, ram, hedgehog, etc)
To break the curse you can either make the werewolf bleed or grab the clothes and burn them. Both highly dangerous because they will drive the werewolf mad and bloodthirsty

Peeira - technically a female werewolf or wolf fairy, they're actually regular women (occasionally with really hairy legs) who are the wolves' companions/guardians/shepherds and can communicate with both wolves and werewolves. Usually they're only seen in the distance, surrounded by wolves, steering them away from human settlements or their flocks. But a rare few seduce men to become food for the pack
Like their male counterparts they're "cumprir o fado" (=fulfilling the fate/curse) and often return to their families and duties during the day. Both often fear their secrets to be found out, the men because that can lead their animal side to target people as a revenge or to run away to never be seen again, and the women because that can force them to live with the packs forever (outside of the whole population lashing at them in fear)

Coca - each region developed their own interpretation of the creature over the centuries, ranging from anything between a dragon to a boogeyman. But usually it's always associated with the skull and 3 burning orifices that represent the head (the eyes and mouth) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coco_(fo…

Trasgo - a kind of domestic goblin/imp with a red cap closely related to the asturian trasgus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trasgu , they like to cause all sorts of trouble and mischief. But here they're also associated to the souls of unbaptized children who like to play pranks on adults

Fradinho da Mão Furada - a kind of domestic goblin with a red cap and a hole on each palm, they often sneak in the bedrooms at night through the keyhole, sit on your chest and cover your face with his hands (you don't suffocate because of the holes) to cause you nightmares. But if you manage to grab his cap he'll pay large sums to get it back and stop pestering you (it's also said he helps around the house or grants favors every now and then)

Marine Woman/Man - very similar to the tritons and other 2 legged mermaids, the main difference is they can walk on land and often enjoy taking sunbaths on the beach, grab fruit and steal fish from lone fishermen, or occasionally use the echos of the cliff caves to sing or play music. They're also known to predict the weather and coming storms (or sing them into existence according to some interpretations) and ruin nets and boats if upset
They were considered so commonplace, there are 2 laws passed by the king in different occasions. One claiming that any large marine mammal found dead on the coast (dolphin, whale, coca, marine men or musaranha (haven't managed to find what that last one is)) belongs to the crown. And the other saying that all offerings to the marine folk should be delivered to the crown so the army could do the distribution all at once
*it's believed the marine men were actually seals that once lived along the portuguese coast. Which also matches the description the marine men weren't afraid of approaching boats and people while on sea, but would run away from them on land*

Gambozino - the portugese version of the Snipe Hunt, its description ranges from anything from a bird or a fish to a hedgehog, a firefly to even a marine dragon or an underground plant. I mentioned it because it's name is still widely used when someone tells you to fetch something that doesn't exist (or to hunt for an item that's nowhere near the place they told you to look)

Adamastor - technically a marine giant of insane proportions invented by the poet Camões, we count it as an important part of our literary mythology en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamasto…
