NO WORRIES! take a breath. I understand you have a life outside of the internet. I might have started to worry about you just a little bit. I'm so glad to hear from you!

I'm okay. My mom is great. She's out of prison and living in Florida. She just reconnected with her dad about 2 weeks ago, so I guess I have another grandpa again... It's weird, I know. College is going great. I love my classes. I honestly don't remember which grade I was with when I talked with you last... but I'm with third graders now, 9-10 year olds, and they are so well behaved. I love it. In the new year I'll be student teaching and taking over a class for a semester before I graduate! Such a scary thought!! 

How about you? How are you? College? How did your first year go? Was it as hard as you thought it would be? How were your classes? How's your family? What was it like living away from home and with your brother? How's the restaurant doing?  :hugs: It's so great to hear from you!!!

Jess!! <3 I missed you so much! I'm really happy about your mom! I didn't know you had no relationship with your grandpa, I hope everything is going well! Also, are you graduating next year? Oh my God, it actually is a little scary xD But I'm sure you'll be amazing, especially because you love what you do. I can't stop smiling while I'm typing this!

So many questions xD Well, I'm great! UNI life is nice, made some cool friends and this year I promised to myself I will go out more often. So yeah I spend about 8-10 hours outside of my place, which is a huge win xD First year was okay, it was pretty boring but now it feels more like I belong here and the awkwardness is completely gone. Classes are great, really interesting stuff this year. There is a cool teacher who is awesome with his students, so he's officially my favourite teacher, even though he's strict as hell when it comes to grading our exam papers.
My family is doing well, thank you for asking My brother and I have gotten used to each other and I dare say we have bonded a little bit more xD We're having a bit of a hard time with the restaurant, no costumers and crisis and stuff, but we get by
How about you? How are your sisters, any new friends? Did it work out with your mom? I remember you were worried about it! Can't wait for your reply!

I never really mentioned my grandpa because he dropped out of my life and the family when I was around 10 or so and as bad as it sounds I kinda thought he might have died since then. But he's not and it's great. I am graduating this/next year (may 2015). It's so close and so far away! I'm so nervous about entering the real world! I can't stop smiling either. It's so great to hear from you again Sophie

That's great that you're liking university life! What types of classes are you taking? I love teachers like that, they make learning so much easier and more memorable. I've found with teachers like that to find out what they're looking for in their papers and give them exactly what they want to get the best grade. 

So glad to hear about you and your brother getting closer. I'm so sorry about the restaurant and I really hope things get better soon. 

My sisters are doing okay. One is in her first year of university and seems to be enjoying it. She's making friends at least. The other sister still has two years of high school left and is focusing on petty drama than school work. I have a few new friends, one girl might as well be my clone. It's creepy how many similarities we have. Mostly I'm focusing on maintaining the friendships I have and my school work than trying to make new friends. Everything is great with my mom. She's living with her best friends mom for now, but is going to be moving in with her dad this week. She's so excited its wonderful.

It's great to be in contact with you again. I missed our conversations so much.

It's great to hear that everything is going well. I always find it heartwarming when you meet a family member after so many years. My grandpa passed away two weeks ago, so it makes me really happy to hear about your reunion You're graduating half a year from now! It's sooner than I thought! Soooo exciting! xD What do you think about doing after gruaduation? I know you want to work with graders, so is there any chance you will get to do that right away?

There are six classes this semester. Three of them are kind of general on their topic. First one is about archaeology and what archaeologists do and how should they do it and some info about findings and statues and whatever. Second one is about history and again what a historian should do and how should they do it and blah blah blah. Third one is anthropology, which is not as boring as the previous two xD I got to choose the other two classes, one is all about the Minoan civilization and the other about Prehistoric Archaeology. It sounds boring I know, sometimes it is, but it still is fascinating! Sixth class is English, piece of cake xD
What about your classes?

Don't be sorry about the restaurant, it's been that way for years now, sometimes it's really bad, sometimes it's okay. We're not super poor or something, but everyone has to make a few compromises here and there.

What is your sister studying?
You'd told me about your little sister and her school drama a couple times, I hope one day she will realize that all of this doesn't matter.
It's really funny and weird when you find people who resemble you so much! And since you have half a year left, it's better if you focus on school work more than anything else.
It's really amazing knowing that your mom is doing okay!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I never know what to say in these kinds of situations, but I want you to know that you have my sympathy.

Hopefully I can work with first graders (5-7 year olds depending on their birthday and the cut off date). But the trick is going to be finding where I want to teach, like what city or town, and then applying there. So far I have no idea how to even go about doing that. The great thing about my college's education program is that we have a 95% rate of graduates getting jobs in the first year. 

Your classes sound so interesting!! I know you like history and such, but even I would love to take some of those classes. The ones about specific history sound like they would be great classes. But I'm just a giant nerd who likes learning about different things. So any super interesting facts you feel like sharing I am all ears. 

My classes are kicking my ass this semester. I only have four, which is the sad thing. Two of them are basically the same class just spread over two class periods. That's education and how to teach. This semester we're focusing more on the how to teach and how to keep students out of trouble mostly. It's interesting, but I feel we don't actually learn anything in class. The other students in that class are so immature. They'd rather talk about fashion and name brands and how much money they spent on something than actual classwork. And the teacher joins in. Even though we get almost nothing done in class we have so much homework and papers and projects for that class. I had 3 ten page reports, one 5 page contract, and a 15 page philosophy paper all for this one class. My other classes are pretty good. I'm taking rhetoric, which is really fun. I wish we met more often and for longer. The professor is amazing and I love the discussions we get in there. My last class is childrens literature. The class could be so amazing, but the professor is horrible. She can't stay on topic and when she does just repeats herself all the time. 

My sister keeps changing what she wants to study. I think she's taking mostly general education courses now since it's her first year and she wants to get them over with. She's looking into the benefits of becoming an accounting major or something to do with math. At least that's the last I heard. 

I'm going to spend some of my winter break with my mommy and grandpa in Florida!! It's gonna be amazing.

No crying. Not allowed. Just smiles.

This is great! And kind of surprising, I never thought there would be such a high possibility of finding a job. Mostly because in Greece, the chances of a graduate from a college like yours are more like 5%. So, in an attempt to help, are you thinking about big cities or a town? Maybe not far from home, so you can visit your sisters, or somewhere near your mom? Have you thought of applying at a city far away from where you live right now, so you can start anew? (question; is it “apply at” or “apply to” or whatever? Which one is correct?)

Actually, a teacher told us that the origins of Kansas’ song Dust in the wind are some ancient Greek philosopher’s words. He was a student of Socrates I think and he had said “In the end, we all are dust in the wind” or something like that. Also something I didn’t know was that the letter H in Latin wasn’t actually a letter, but it helped with the pronunciation of some words. And the letter F comes from H, which the teacher explained in a sketch I cannot recall right now. So today when you write F*, it means that something doesn’t exist. I don’t know if the way I explained it makes any sense xD

How are they teaching you to keep students out of trouble?? What do they say, “make sure he’s not bullying his classmates”?
Wow, too much homework! I don’t remember any assignments the past 1.5 year of my studies!
What do they teach you in rhetoric class? I’m really curious.
I know how you feel about that last teacher. There are so many great classes but the teachers are so boring and/or they don’t know how to teach properly.

Your sister must be really smart. It’s okay if she wants to take a year to decide what she wants to study, I honestly believe it’s the best thing to do. Clear her head from all the high school madness and take a step back to think about it.

I'm looking into moving to Florida to be with my mom. It'll be about 12 hours from where I am now. I don't really know which way is correct... apply at sounds like the place like I will apply at the school. Apply to sounds like for the position like I will apply to become a teacher. There's also apply for like I will apply for the opening. I think it depends on dialects and a bunch of other linguistic stuff. The way applying works is that I apply for the entire county. Each county has different number of schools. My home county has 7 elementary (5-10 year olds) two middle schools (11-13 year olds) and three high schools (14-18 years old). but the county my college is in has 10 elementary schools and only one middle and high school. It varies a lot. And that's just public schools. There's also charter schools and private to consider, but those are typically harder to find and apply to. 

That is really cool about letters. So since H wasn't a real letter but an indicator of pronunciation and then F is taken from H... It's basically a letter created from another letter that doesn't exist. Language is weird and awesome. I could spend so many years learning about languages and differences and how they were created and grew...

There's different strategies we get told about. Proximity is my favorite. Basically the teacher just stands near the misbehaving student. In the younger grades this works really well. I've used it in my third grade and first grade internships before. Sometimes just placing a hand casually on the students desk works too. Another way is to use precorrection. Correction is when you hush students in the hall. Precorrection would be reminding students of expected behavior, like being quiet and respectful while they walk in the hallways, before they begin the activity. Reverse psychology works too. Praising the students who are behaving well in front of the students who are not. This gets the misbehaving students to stop and follow the example.

Rhetoric is a really fun class. It's all about arguments. We started with speeches and how the speaker uses their words, body language, and tone of voice. Then we looked at different images and the messages they were sending to what audience. We also studied different great rhetoricians like Socrates, Martin Luther King Jr, Hitler, and Susan B Anthony.  We noted what strategies and tactics they used to persuade people to their sides. Then we tried to immitate some of their styles to convince others to join our side in a formal debate. Even though it has the second highest paper requirement it's still an amazing class and I love it. I actually enjoyed writing my papers. I did one on something someone submitted here and had a blast writing it.

Yesterday I was thinking about how I missed you and then, HORROR. I remembered I still hadn’t replied to you! xD So today class is canceled and I can FINALLY stay home and take my time to write a proper message. It’s so crazy right now because I didn’t use to show up in class very often, and now I’m there like 6-9 hours a day every day and for the past two months everyone is soo overwhelmed, like they cannot comprehend that I just passed the hallway to get to class. Their faces are priceless, a girl I know once stopped walking and just stood there looking at me like “What the hell are you doing here? Don’t tell me you came for the class?” Aah, brings tears of laughter in my eyes and it never gets old!

So, about Florida. It’s a great idea moving there, I think that you should do it. Don’t overthink about it, though I imagine you have already decided, it’s been 4 months since our last conversation xD

Yes, languages are so awesome! We also have this class that’s called Theory and Science of Technology (way easier than it sounds) and the teacher made us spent almost 1 hour on the question “when was the language, as a way of communication, discovered?” He wrote all our answers on the board and each one was totally different from the other (Mesopotamia, Linear A, Egypt etc) and said that all of them were correct, and then he asked why. About half an hour later he told us that the answers are indeed correct, but the question is wrong. Language, first of all was not “discovered”, it was invented by people who needed it in order to write laws in the case of Mesopotamia, or list things they sold across the seas in Crete, or write the borders between the fields when the river in Egypt overflowed and the preview ones were washed away. So one can say that the proper question is “how many times was the language reinvented?”. I’m telling you Jess, crazy stuff. It took me 2 hours and a big cup of coffee to recover from that class!

Well these ways to discourage bullying could actually work! I never thought there might be that many ways to do so but it’s always good to know! It’s honestly quite embarrassing, but if you’ve never told me I wouldn’t have any idea about those methods.
You haven’t told me though, how is it like working with kids? Is it what you expected? Any favorite students? : )

Rhetoric class sounds superb and fun! It’s really interesting and helpful, knowing the ways people use to persuade others and thinking about all of this afterwards. So who did you imitate? :3
