Thank you so much for the membership - sorry I didn't comment sooner, I haven't been on DA much and just discovered it! But it's a new year, and I intend to put it to good use with a lot of new work. I can't wait to get started, and to look through more of your fabulous stock.
Thanks again, and all the best for 2016!

Yes we do! I've definitely looked through your Wolf Park photos before. Odd comment timing. .. have you heard about Dharma? I was thinking about Wolf Park a lot just now.

Yes, I have. My tears will not stop. I knew her very well! My heart is broken. I've been a Wolf Park member for many years and when Dharma came she reminded me of a wolf who I loved but died very young (Tristan's sister Maya), so we bonded quickly and easily! Dharma kisses were the best!!! My mind acknowledges the tragedy but my heart simply cannot. These are not just wolves to me; they are my friends. And I am broken........

I'm really sorry for your loss. I never had the privilege of meeting Dharma but I had really wanted to. .. I have visited her parents, Kenai and Kaja, many times and I had been looking forward to getting out to Wolf Park one day to meet her. I was beyond startled when I saw the post on Facebook. I'm a staff at the Wolf Mountain Nature Center and our curator had just gone to Wolf Park a few weeks ago and met and adored Dharma. Needless to say, we're all very saddened by the news at our facility.

Hello Amber - When I saw your photography, I had wondered how you had managed such great shots. Your reply explains the mystery. Although I am not staff at Wolf Park, I've been a member for many years. So we are kindred spirits in that regard. I truly wish you had had the chance to meet Dharma. I still cannot grasp that she is gone. I can only imagine how everyone at your facility feel right now as well; she was one of your own. I don't believe that anyone who saw her, sponsored her, met her, interacted with her could have resisted the Dharma charm! That girl knew how to work it! When she came, she reminded me of a young wolf lost far too young that I loved very much, Tristan's sister Maya. So Dharma and I bonded quickly and easily. Besides Dharma kisses were just the best!
I was just writing to a fellow DA friend from across the world that I always had to smile when people come in my office, saw my photos and asked if they are "tame". I have to patiently explain that there is no way to tame a wolf; they are a wild animal and they will behave as a wild animal. We cannot expect any less of them. What has happened is shocking and I'm still trying to come to grips with it but in reality it is the way of the wild.
I've had to say goodbye to too many of my Wolf Park friends and my heart is weary and sad. And I have to stop writing before I begin to cry again......

Of course! I've honestly looked at your photos a lot but I always forget that it makes more sense to watch people than just occasionally stumble across their new works! (That and I'm awful at commenting since I'm usually on dA on my smartphone and dA is NOT very phone friendly for notes/comments).

Which part of NY are you heading to? The Bronx zoo is super nice but they are really strict about photography being purely for personal use and will sometimes tell people to remove the images from sites like this. The Syracuse Zoo is pretty nice. I think most of the animals have nice enclosures and they are fairly photo-friendly. The Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester is nice as well but a bit of a drive from me. The Thompson Park Zoo in Watertown, NY is AMAZING for animals that originally lived in NYS. They focus more on having large enclosures with more animals than having lots of different types of animals with smaller enclosures. The Binghamton Zoo in Binghamton, NY is closed during the winter unfortunately, especially since they have a lot of winter-type animals. The Buffalo Zoo is AWESOME but the furthest drive. Most of their exhibits use trenches so that they is no fence/glass in your way and they have a bunch of winter-loving animals. The Utica Zoo is also one of my favorites. They have a fair amount of predators and the animals there are all pretty happy, though it is a smaller zoo than some of the others listed. All of the animals there are winter-hardy though, including their African lions, who stay out and play in the snow a lot. Personally, I don't know of my facilities in NY that I don't like. I'm not exactly a fan of some of the 'private' places, they remind me a bit of animal collectors in some cases. If you are in the area near Smyrna, NY on a Sunday b/t 12-4pm though, I've been volunteering at the Wolf Mountain Nature Center and it's an amazing facility. We have wolves, arctic foxes and coyotes there and this summer we finished a 9 acre enclosure for the main pack of wolves which is a HUGE enclosure (the wolves actually started behaving more like wild wolves b/c of all the space).
