Wolves should never be kept in zoos, your story about "The Last Words of a Leader" is a very good example. Vienna's Zoo is certainly not better than GermanΒ zoos, please see the photo in my favourites, "Wishes of Freedom" by Astrowind (and my interesting comments!!)
I suggest you check on Google "International Wolf Center", "Wolves Conservation Center" and quite a few other centers in the USA !! You'll see (and maybe understand) the difference between a "zoo" (and Belgian zoos are no better) and a "Wolf Center" !!

I personally don't think you can judge over a zoo when only seeing some photos from the fences withoutΒ actually been there. The pack in Berlin has in my opinion a good enclosure and the wolves show that they aren't unhappy with it. Otherwise they should show some worrying behaviour (as I could watch in some other zoos in the past) and wouldn't reproduce (they did it every year). I never visited the Zoo in Vienna, so I can't tell. Additionally, they're all born in captivity ( different is forbidden in germany as I know) Also I don't think that all Zoos are bad, just because one did a fatal mistake. The problem is just that Zoos are much more profitable and commercial as wild parks for example, but this doesn't mean that the animals have it always better there. Same with our wolf center in DΓΆrverden - I heard good and bad things of it. So don't know - I think there're always good and bad ones, even if nothing can replace the natural environment. Of course not, but this is something what you can tell aboutΒ every animal you see in zoos/wildparks etc.
