SACRIFICE-OF-V [2017-12-09 04:06:14 +0000 UTC]
Hi Isaac! I remember your old website, MFZ - and the art on it - from when I was a kid!
Dang, I gotta say, you've gotten really good at illustration. I'm studying art right now and I hope someday that I'll get as good as what I've seen in your gallery. Is there anything you'd recommend for improving my artistic skill? (I'm studying the figure right now mostly, and I'm starting to gain interest in portraits as well..... I like drawing people )
Btw whatever happened to Kajin? I remember enjoying his Sonic sprite comic Insonicnia and I'm sad that he's seemingly disappeared to nowhere nowadays; I'd love to know what he's doing now.

Hey, thanks for the warm words!
It really depends on what you intend to pursue in art, and the market is much larger than you might think.
I can give you some knowledge/tips, but first what would you like to do?Β
Studying the figure was a huge challenge for me, I haven't really posted anything recent but I've been practicing anatomy non stop for roughly a year now, pouring through anatomy books and lessons. When I do post another piece, I want the anatomy to be pretty spot on.
My bro Adam I won't go into too much detail since that's his private life, but he is set to be married in a year and is doing pretty well. We've been working on another private project together, and hopefully in a year or so I can post something from it ^^

That's a really good question; I hadn't actually considered that until now.
To answer your question though, illustration runs in my blood; I'm a storyteller and a designer, and I want to be able to express any sort of mood or stylistic approach that someone asks of me, whether it be a zany off-the-wall cartoon or a realistic down-to-earth portrait (currently cartooning is my strength; to be honest, I'm a cartoonist at heart so it's not too surprising that's the case).
The figure is challenging, I feel your pain there. I understand the basics but I need to study more of the details such as the individual bones & muscles soon (as well as the head! Gosh that's a difficult thing to draw ).
What books do you recommend exactly? I own Figure Drawing for All It's Worth & Drawing the Head and Hands (both by Andrew Loomis) and I've been slowly dipping into Bridgman, Hogarth, and Vilppu's books over time as well.
That's awesome!! Congrats to he and his fiancee; as an old fan of his work I wish them both the best!
Very excited to hear about the fact you guys are working on something new as well! Looking forward to when you guys eventually put it out
Merry Christmas by the way!

For illustration, your absolutely going to want to look into background courses then; unfortunately that's an area I intend to look into during 2018 and can't give much advice for yet...Β
However regarding Anatomy! Proko.com or the Proko youtube channel is great for learning the individual muscles and bones. But my absolute go to and biggest break through in anatomy was thanks to this book . Honestly 3D artists do anatomy the best, so it only makes sense to learn anatomy in 3D lol; the books on drawing in 2D never did squat for me and it was infuriating. The book does a wonderful job of showing all the muscles from different angles as well as positions, plus grouping and breaking them down into understandable sections. But you're still going to need to practice, and figure drawing is a must.Β
My sketches overall have been quicker and more accurate as a result of the above, I'm hoping to produce Majora's Wrath and Oni Link in the near future to show off my new knowledge Β
Hope this helps!Β
Thank you, and hope you have a great New Years tomorrow!Β

I was actually thinking of taking up the task of color reduction to your EPIC sheet of Robotnik Prime, making him more in line with the amount of colors needed for him to properly appear on Genesis, if that's ok with you

Found it, I'd be mad, but they literally left a link back to me lol. Honestly it's a harmless edit, and they aren't taking credit for the original.Β
Thank you for letting me know though Β

Hi!
You must be Damien, right? The admin (or maybe it was Kajin...?) of the Mystical Forest Zone!
Why the sudden closure of the MFZ? Then the "forest will bloom again" thingy and the closure again?

IsaacJLitman In reply to GFTheplayer [2017-01-25 04:57:35 +0000 UTC]
Yup, that's me : )Β
I'm really sorry about closing MFZ, honestly life got in the way for both Kajin and I, we weren't able to maintain regular updates or the forum, and eventually decided it was no longer worth pursuing as our goals and interests changed. There was a brief moment we thought of bringing it back, but as we were working on it we realized neither of us had the confidence or interest left to continue. The majority of my sprites can be found on the www.spriters-resource.com/ now.Β Β

Hi there! I found your artwork on an Undertale remix so I decided to check you out.
and holy fudge you are amazing.
I wanted to congratulate you for being such a good artist and I really want to know what program you use! I am currently using photoshop, but I don't always get the result I want with my art. Tips if you can plz!!!!
Also, Happy Birthday!!!!!!
oh wait is it even your birthday still

Lol, I think I know which remix you're talking about, and thank you Β
I use Photoshop CC, and currently paint on the Surface Book. I enjoy the Surface Book because of its thin glass and high resolution, it feels much more natural to work on than the Cintiq, even though its not as strong as Wacom's product. That said Microsoft is going to announce its "All in one PC" sometime next month I believe, and it sounds like it might be a real competitor to the Cintiq due to its size and touch screen surface.Β
As for other tips, that depends which direction you want to go? Hit me back with some more questions.Β
And lol, my birthday was in July, but thank you regardless.Β

I kinda want to learn more on how to make things more realistic and get good at shadowing and perspective. I can always see how I want it to come out, but then it never comes out how I want it to. I'm trying to work on something like this right now actually. What do you think of it?Β sta.sh/01y775edfr6i Plz let me know any critiques! Oh, and thanks for helping out... >////<

For what you're asking, drawing from life will be best, and working traditionally for the time being. While Photoshop is a powerful program, it's best utilized when you're bringing the techniques you learned from pencil, painting or any number of methods of working traditionally. Time and perseverance are also key, as well as find the right classes and teachers.Β
For learning lighting and shadow, setup a two or three objects in a dark room and shine a lamp on them. You'll want to study not only the form and shadow, but how the color bounces of the correlating surface and objects. It helps to take a photo if you have a powerful camera, and to set the photo to gray-scale to better understand the values. I recommend beginning with black and white, and as you advance in lighting and shading, to then pick up color.Β
Once you switch to color, be your choice acrylic or oil paints, learning how to mix colors is just as important as learning how to apply them. That said, color did not come easily to me and I was very stubborn and impatient, lol. I personally learned color best when switching to hard pastels, because I couldn't deal with how long it took paint too dry : PΒ
I did try learning all of these things in Photoshop first with little success. Working from life and doing things traditionally is the way to go first if you want to understand how to make things look realistic. Applying that knowledge later to Photoshop is how you make things feel real.Β
