Are you looking to stay in the states when you get back or do you want to go abroad somewhere else? I'm currently talking to a recruiter about finding a job in Korea. Eventually I would like to move somewhere else, but I think this will be good experience living abroad.

Sadly, no decent scanner here. ;.; Korea's a good startoff point. I know a lot of people who taught English in Japan, too, and really liked it.

For me, I'm going to be Stateside for at least a year to learn Persian Farsi, then I'll either be in Georgia or Bahrain (crazy opposite options, no? lol).

Korea's fine, but I'm in the service so I have a lot different perspective, but I do know a lot of american teachers there. Check out eatyourkimchi.com Also, beware that the more education you have, the better your treatment will be. As well, go over there with at least a little bit of money saved, and don't let them take your passport if you're teaching (make them get a photocopy or something). Sometimes the less scrupulous organizations will take your passport to make sure you stay and fullfill your contract. Either that, or they will require (in your contract) that you repay the airfare if you decide you want to get out of it.

That said, there are lots of people I know who really enjoy the job there. It just depends on who you work for. Sometimes the hagwons (private institutions) will pay more, but are less reliable. Conversely, state-funded schools will pay a bit less but usually are more stable and overall treat you better. You'll have the best bargaining power if you've got a four year degree and ESL certification.

I've got a friend that taught over there for two years at a Hagwon. He really enjoyed it and is planning to go back. I've got a Master's Degree in education and two years experience in the field. I feel, from what he's told me, that I won't have any trouble finding a good job if I make sure to ask the right questions to the right people.

Any particular places you enjoy going in Seoul? I know about Itaewon, but are there any specific places an artist might enjoy going?

With a master's in education, you'll be fine and get a great job, then I really don't recommend Itaewon. It's full of a lot of desperate GIs who are lonely, and it's full of foreigners and generally just geared at getting your money. It's mostly bars, really. Seedy ones. Personally, I avoid it like the plague, since it's also probably one of the most dangerous parts of Seoul. That said, Seoul's probably the safest megacity in the world, so as long as you travel in a pack and don't do anything dumb, you should be fine.

Hongdae is great for a lot of international folks and neat clubs. There is a bit of a drug scene there, but applying your usual common sense will keep you safe.

The arts and culture district near Hyehwa subway station is great for plays (they have a few in English) and I think there are some art museums. It's a pretty artsy scene, but I didn't notice much in the way of actual museums or supply shops.

There is a traditional Korean village and history thereon near the largest palace in Seoul, Kyeongbok. Insadong and Chogye Buddhist temple are also in that area. Insadong is kind of tourist-y, but there are a lot of cool places to eat. There are also a lot of little personal art galleries and crafters there, as well as a few artists running their own shops (just have to hunt for them a bit).

Namdaemun had at least one art supply store. I think there are one or two in Itaewon (just go during daylight hours, and you'll be pretty safe). I really love Namdaemun, though. All the street vendors and awesome food and neat-o sights and sounds. It really comes alive as the sun sets.

If you enjoy hiking, there are also a lot of hiking trails, like the one near Seoul Tower. They're really beautiful, and surprisingly right in the middle of the city.

Also, if you can, do make friends with a few U.S. servicemembers while you're there. They've got access to things like deoderant and other stuff that the Koreans really don't have or will cost you a high fortune to get.

Oooh lots of neat stuff I will have to check out. Thanks for the info. I look forward to finding some cool art. I imagine knowing where the art shop is will be helpful as well I'm looking to go sometime this summer (if I go). I never thought about finding deodorant... I did hear that it can be hard finding bras that fit. My friend recommended that I bring plenty with me

I've heard about the GI's. It's rather said, really.
