Not really because I don't have much time to draw. (And the forums are no longer appealing to me.) I do check this account weekly but there's really not much for me to interact with.

Yeah, I stopped uploading anything because I never finish anything. I'd start a big project and get really into it and stop midway through. A lot of it was cause I was so burned out by working all the damn time. I have a canvas I'm painting with acrylics so hopefully I'll finish it. I used to have a lot of art on this account but I deleted every thing and I can't find back ups of my deleted stuff. XD
I actually started out doing KiSS dolls/kisekae ningyou dress up dolls back in '97. That was the first pixel art I did. I picked up dolling in it's hey day to try new techniques and so I could pixel even when I got sick of my KiSS dolls. I kept trying to get back into dolling, but my interest would fade every time because I couldn't find a program I liked for it. Photoshop is just way to clunky for pixel art. I used to use this old program that was made for Windows '95 and I was able to use it up to Windows XP (it kept crashing even in compatibility mode but I just saved often). I finally found ProMotion and I like it well enough.
Anyway, it's been cool to see your art. I know you post a bit of it on Tumblr some times, but it was cool to look through and see your different OCs and what not. You make some really cool designs.

That sucks. At least anything new you add would probably look way better than your old stuff. That's how art tends to be. :P
I don't know much about dolling other than it being very complex dress-up that you build from scratch using a base. For anything pixel/hard-edge I tend to use MS Paint or GIMP with a the pencil brush. But then I heard that wasn't proper. IDK.
My Tumblr was originally supposed to be for art but I don't like that site at all for my better art. Mostly because it's so disorganized, you just dump everything there and that's it. For WIPs or other doodles I don't care about it's okay. At least I can keep this gallery clean, since I try to only upload nicer looking things. I'd also argue that others can delete or edit the artist comments too and I found that distasteful.

Oh yeah...new stuff always looks better than the old stuff. Even if I can't draw something by hand, I can pixel draw it. That's never left. If nothing else, I understand color a lot better than when I left 6 years ago.
Honestly, you can use any program. I knew a lot of dollers/KiSS dollers that would only use MS Paint. My favorite program was this thing called MGI PhotoSuite. I didn't know anyone else that used it. To me it was like MS Paint on steroids. It had full support for GIF files, which Paint didn't, and a nice big palette that was easy to use. I found ProMotion NG the other day and it's taken some getting used to, but I like it. There's a free version, which is what I'm currently using. Paid version has a lot more and is for pixel game making, but the free version is great for doing art.
And yeah, basically it's kind of a collaboration between you and the original base maker (unless you made your base or it's baseless). You use bases with proper credit and you complete a doll based on whatever you want to draw. There's a lot of fashion and a lot of fanart. I started with KiSS dolls, which were complex dress up dolls you had to use a program (usually either PlayFKISS or later DirectKISS) to view the dolls. It's kind of like those Flash dolls that are popular now. They started from KiSS. So dolling for me a lot of time was experimental styles or outfits I could never do in my dolls. I got into it because of anime fanart dolls and stayed for the fashion. I made a lot of friends from KiSS dolling. After the website that hosted the dolls went to a pay service, a lot of us went to dolling and then dolling on here basically died after DeviantArt said tracing were okay. The dollers got over run by the tracing and that was that. Killed a lot of people's passion.
Tumblr just blows for art. The only thing it's good for is getting out to a lot of people and being a status update like "look at what I'm doing." It's too clunky to search for stuff. I saw some dollers talking about that just the other day. Also with the way Tumblr formats and distorts image files, it can be a pain just to try to get them to look decent on there.

I never liked the tracing, though I have used traced bases in the past just because I needed something to do. I need to try it, though I heard that for pixel art to be proper, you needed to work from a palette, not just paint things with a hard-edge brush. Not sure, I could be wrong but then I've always been an "end justifies the means" when it comes to art, to an extent.
The irony of Tumblr I found as a dA user was that many artists from here moved to Tumblr because they wanted to be more "proper". Often these were people who begged for comments and critiques. From what I've seen, they were fools who took like twelve steps backwards, especially since reblogging is messy and I agree with the distortion. It didn't occur to me until you mentioned it. If anything, the only plus Tumblr has is that it lets you upload porn without being a pornographic webiste. Though my main blog isn't for that and I've not had the need to do that.

Tracing was kind of the norm when I got into it, but back then no body knew about copyright laws and info was a lot harder to find (and everyone was a weeb like no joke). Also there were almost no drawing tablets and the programs were so limited. I first experienced layers and multiple undo (but not unlimited) with Photoshop 5.5 and Paint Shop Pro 7. I got a Wacom Graphire 2 when they first came out and I was one of the few people not mouse drawing. Haha. As we grew older and we started to learn more, we realized how bad tracing really was and we just stopped.
I guess some people do pixel art by coming up with a palette and all of that. I, uh, just go with the flow. I just come up with everything as I go (clothes, palette, hair is almost always last). If you open up my pixel art in a program and look at the palette it is all over the place! Like, I usually do each piece one at a time. I started with the jacket, then the top, skirt, hosiery, boots, and last I'll do the hair on this one I'm working on. I do the outlines first in a gross bright color if the outfit is super detailed like Raven's was. Then I will changed the outline colors on the fly as I color and shade each piece. If it's not super detailed, I just outline using a color that I think will be the outline color and then as I color it I might color correct the outline color on the fly. My palettes end up with a lineart color here, a shade there, a highlight where ever. Nothing is in order. It's not the most efficient way of doing things, but my thoughts are constantly scattered all over the place (I've thought for a long time I have adult ADD but I have a hatred of going to doctors). This method is just what works for me. To me, there's no "proper" way to do it. Everyone I knew had different methods and different programs and different styles.
DA artists like that are just looking for faves. It's kind of like all of the artists that moved to Instagram, which I can get more than Tumblr. At least Instagram is a gallery format with proper comments. Tumblr is just a mess. These people are just into instant gratification. But with both of these websites (or apps), there's still no real way to connect and talk to people. I like DA for art because you can (or maybe could since it's kind of quiet these days) connect with people and there's a sense of community. With the instant gratification places, it's just really you. I guess that's okay if you want everything to be about yourself. XD
