Just to keep it simple, and work up from there. If you're fine with working with patterns, Folkwear #108 and Simplicity #5359 are good ones. The Simplicity one is what I used for that vest. The pants in that pattern are another pattern that I've used over and over, though I simplified it some. I did this by not putting a zipper, and using the waistband piece from the skirt instead. I also eliminated the ankle bands (just make a casing for the elastic at the bottom instead.
