You are very lucky to know someone who is interested in this subject.... Usually the people stare blankly at me when I say norse mythology, and when I add Thor, Loki or Odin they think of the marvel comic or the movie -.-''Β
I hate the movie of Thor....so inaccurate...expecially Loki...
I think that the people should try to learn also the nordic mythologies (irish, germanic, norse, russian etc.) and not only the roman and the greek ones.

I actually know a few story tellers, they LOVE loki and norse mythology. ^_^
I know right? My friends love it and I'm like THATS NOT LOKI!!!
Definitely the norse gods are far more interesting as characters than the greeks (I did classics A-level so know loads of greek) and the roman is just greek with different names and a few stolen gods. The greeek goddesses are ridiculous, you can tell no women had a part in writing that mythology but in norse you have interesting women as well as men, and most importantly the Norse gods are not a bunch of psychotic murderers. You'd think what with the viking's reputation and the greeks being thought of as the origin of civilisation the greeks would be more cultured and complex characters but they so aren't just one dimensional psychos the lot of them. But the Norse gods are like people.
I wrote a lil joke thing a while ago with the norse and greek gods arguing over which is the better mythology. Norse wins of course.

lolΒ the text is really amusing, and I tend to agree with your opinion of the greek gods...
obviously the gods are depicted in that way in the greek mythology because of the culture of the population...they didn't value so much the "clan" or the family, so it's natural to find a selfish pantheon; then the people used to scheme a lot about other people so the gods represent human vices. So I think that this is a religion crated with the purpose of teaching what's wrong and how NOT behave.
The opposite happens in the norse mythology, where we find an entertain purpose of the mythology; yes, some of the myths had an instructive purpose but the majority of them are simply funny (e.g. Thor dressed as Freja).
I continue to think that the norse mythology is one the best mythologies around XD

Iglybo In reply to Laicasarde [2014-01-21 18:58:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes the norse is a lot more meant for entertainment, of course when you consider that the norse was used to keep people amused through long winters while the greek would have been told less often it makes sense.
It really is I have yet to find a better one ^^
