Well how I did mine, was I used this pattern [link] (if the link doesn't work try McCalls M5252) minus a few of the pockets... I used a fabric that resembles raincoat fabric (its easier to sew with and no one really notices the difference) and then when I would stitch a seam,I would add a piece of ribbon, on the "outer/right" side (The side everyone would see). pin the heck out of it. Then I used my machine to stitch it on. Or if you prefer hand stitching then you can do that too! remove the pins, and repeat...
I would recommend adding the ribbon as you go instead of the end!
