Ahh, well, to be honest, Tales of Zestiria was my first tales game I ever played. I don't play JRPG that much, despite my artstyle. (Except for Shin Megami Tensei series. That stuff is the bomb).

But, I would say Rose is my favourite character personality wise, and Lailah comes second because "reasons" :>

Ah so is it a more "I like anime more than JRPGs" type thing? or is it just the art style you adopted from other artists?
The tales series inspired my art since 6th grade. Tales of Symphonia was my first and still my very favorite and I replay it even now. It taught me a lot about who I wanted to be, and how I would cope with problems. 
Tales of Zestria is actually the weakest for me tbh. Though the last scene with Dezel? mn...I cried, real tears. Im glad that Zavied turned into not a douchy guy tho. Lailah was my LEAST fav...like "I know everything but I aint gone tell you" LIKE WHY ARE YOU HERE? I gotta wait for the storyteller be breakin his vows n dyin n shit? Why is that necessary if my immortal spirit thing can just tell me? the fuck? XD her personality is just balls to me.  

BROOOOOOOOOO. SMT got me like for LIFE. I loved Nocturne like "starring dmc dante" XD I was like noooooo. I am muy excited for P5.  It seems in all JRPGs a mascot character is completely unavoidable XD like can we just...with the humans? thanks.

I... don't watch much of anime either. It's more like the latter, but with a single artist. Maybe two, since persona 3 have both Kazuma Kaneko and Shigenori Soejima on helm.
But yeah, Persona 3 is the first "Anime-like" game I played (I mean DMC, RE, SH, MGS, also made by Japanese people but it's not actually "anime like"... you know what I meant) and it influenced me since 7 or 8th grade, I think. I love Shin Megami Tensei series. It got me thinking a lot. They often touch a very deep subject. Like in nocturne, yeah we reversed the apocalypse, but for what? is reviving the world even a good thing? letting the cycle re-start just for it to be happen again? should we halt change? Maybe Musubi end is a good thing? Maybe Shijima is not so bad after all? Or maybe, Lucifer is right. We should punch god in the face, like, really really hard. But if that's too satanic, maybe start with persona 4. They handle the theme abput "truth" and "identity" really really well (I can't stress how great they handled it). It's like, psychology and symbolism have a love child. Can't wait to see how they handle the conformity subject in 5.
Mascot character is forgivable, I think. you know, considering the "moe"-style drawing polarized the anime industry to the point that it makes me afraid to even start watching anime again.

Now to the tales, I agree for Lailah being nonsensical. I think the writer makes a mishap there. It baffles me. I like Lailah for the graceful design, rather than the character itself. Lailah's design for me nails "beauty" really well. And that's rich, considering that most anime girls are pretty in the first place. I haven't played other series so I can't vouch much.
