Any time~ I've got a bit of a culture/tradition obsession, so that was a pretty awesome shot through my eyes.

I wouldn't call it stalking... I think stealthily observing is a much better phrase, don't you?

Well, to be honest, I had forgotten until I came upon another DA user with Mango in his name, and it reminded me that you had an account. So, I got curious as to if you had been updating your art. After a few clicks here and there, I found your page, and now here I am.

XD Well, this is your lucky day. You've caught me on the other end of a hiatus that I went on for improvement. (and because I went to Ireland and then had the last semester of college to deal with and if I had been trying to be even a little bit regular about posting while I wrote my thesis and made sure all my accounts were settled and did all my last minute requirements, I would have torn out every last strand of my hair and then drowned myself in the school creek~)

I'm glad I caught you when I did then!

Oooh, Ireland, how fauncy! How did you like it there?

It was damp, but awesome. Walked everywhere, kissed the Blarney Stone, got rained on at the cliffs of Moher so me and the other people in the group took an awesome jump-take photo. Tasted a beer I actually liked (Rebel Red, tiny kittle Irish microbrew that only got to have once out in County Cork) raised hell in a few bars since FIFA was in its last games and I was hoping one of the African teams would win, aaaaand enjoyed the Skipper Festival in Kilarney. Also a potato party pre-finals night.

Twas a blast~

Well, I haven't done anything as exciting as go to Ireland, but I did travel to New York last year for a week. It was a rather good time.
x3
Other than that, I've been messing around in college, and being a bum. Nothing very noteworthy, just, you know, life.

I myself am only halfway through college, though it's probably going to take longer for me than I thought, due to some... unfortunate happenstances.
But, I'll get there eventually.

And also, thank you for another reason I'm about to explain.
I've been in a terrible art funk lately, I haven't been able to sketch, or paint, or write, or compose anything for a long time now. But it seems browsing through your art has inspired me to sketch something! Which is a marvelous feat, considering it's been almost a year since I contracted horrible, horrible titanium walled artist block.

Awesome
I like to think that while I may not be professional grade, my gallery is eclectic enough to have a wide appeal and be inspiring to others :3

Speaking of which, you know the 'Equinox' in my gallery is the one I used to use in the rp, right? One day I got bored and stayed up all night drawing in those *(@&$ing pebble scales.

Don-Yata In reply to MangoRamune [2012-05-27 01:06:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh, your art is very good. Given time, I have no doubt you'll hit a professional grade if you keep at it.

And yes, I figured as much, them having the same name and all.

As a person who loves drawing dragons from time to time, I can sympathize.

MangoRamune In reply to Don-Yata [2012-05-27 01:20:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't know why we torture ourselves.

And yeah, I'll get there. I'm noticing that that I'm pleased with a larger percentage of things I finish lately. I can see what's wrong with them, but there errors are less with anatomy and color harmony now. Now it's more about perspective and being a little less muted with the shadow play. I'm thinking of doing some Gentileschi studies to help with that...

It also helps that I work literally a block away from the Art Institute in this city. I'm thinking of going for a double major in graphic design and traditional art studio~
I have no aspirations of ever being out of student debt, apparently, since I still have to go back to school for a master's degree in counseling psych ;w;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Don-Yata In reply to MangoRamune [2012-05-27 01:42:48 +0000 UTC]

Because despite having to hand draw a bajillion scales, the end result is usually very satisfying.
xD

I actually got myself a few anatomy books in order to properly draw the human figure. Unfortunately, I spent most of my younger drawing days making male characters, so I'm fairly decent at drawing a male body by memory, but my females often stink.
xD
I'm not going too much into color right now, though I plan to experiment with watercolors soon.
I really need to advance myself in perspective and shadows as well... I think a major part of my art block was feeling like my drawings fell too flat from the mark I wanted them to be in, which was majorly discouraging.
But, I'm slowly getting out of that funk, thankfully. I think I'm going to take up sketching nature to further my perspective issues. I need to do more "real life" art if I'm ever going to get anywhere.

Oooh, that's cool! I wish I had an artsy place nearby. I have to get everything from the internet most of the time, which while not a bad thing, makes me feel detached sometimes.

Student debt sucks, but hopefully the education drives you to success. Hopefully.
xD

MangoRamune In reply to Don-Yata [2012-05-27 03:39:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was feeling a little discouraged before my hiatus too. But it seems like it takes some frustration before you stop being impatient, sit down, and really pay attention to your resources, so I'd count it as a sign that you'll see a jump in the quality of your work soon.

Right before I started back I got a really good resource...
Lessee... Bridgman's complete guide to drawing from life. The illustrations are all extremely basic/rough-edged, but for some reason that makes understanding it that much easier.

Maybe we could take pointers from each other, since I have the opposite problem you do. I'm certainly getting better at males recently but I'm still crutching along with body language and facial structure.

The education...XD I'm really not ambitious. My aspirations are sensible and not really risky. All I really want is to be an art therapist in my 30s and switch to being a school counselor that paints on the side when I'm old and crotchety and have raised my own children and am even less liable than I am now to put up with some high school student's bullshit. XD

Don-Yata In reply to MangoRamune [2012-05-28 09:14:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, I certainly hope so.
x3

It certainly sounds interesting, I'll be sure to look it up.
^w^

Sure, I'd love to trade pointers sometime! Though to be honest I'm still quite amateur even if I'm better at drawing males, but I'll be happy to assist in any way I can.
^-^

It's certainly a viable pursuit. As long as it makes you happy, ambitious or not, it will be worth the trouble in the end.

It doesn't really stand for anything. It's not an acronym, just a word that supposedly translates literally as 'hey' but really behaves more like a battlecry in the game.
