Silly me, I forgot the traditional way, you can sue a degradation of the color you want around the character (.marcelinethekiller.deviantart.… ) or with those little things that are left when you use a sharpener (not an electric one) you can blur it all over the paper so you don't actually color it with pencils (. marcelinethekiller.deviantart.… ) woo okno xD, mm what else ah or if you want to be hardcore you can use pointillism (but I recommend you to use this technique with small areas) (marcelinethekiller.deviantart.… ) or what's easier you can just use lines (marcelinethekiller.deviantart.… )

Mm faber castell (?) color pencils and markers (but I also use Big but only color pencils)
(practically almost all the color pencils I have since third grade (2017) xD meh) mmm I also use farber castell watercolors and Pebeo acrylics
(if you don't want to have a bad time don't use Oil colors!)

Backgrounds mm, well if there's only a character like some drawings of you I've seen you can scan them (that's something I do most of the time) go to that app I once told you paint a layer of the color you want and go to pixlr (another autodesk app) and edit that layer (which is not that hard) and voilá you get your amazing background or do the same thing on sketchbook but edit it there erase the part of the layer where the character is supposed to be and well play with it, I can post the whole edits if you want, it sounds difficult but it's pretty easy I also use another app called sketches
